Haarlem oil: the composition of this amazing remedy from Dutch alchemy

Haarlem oil takes its name from the city of Haarlem in the Netherlands, where it was first created at the end of the 16th century. This alchemical discovery is said to be the work of the chemist Claes Tilly. Initially, it was named Medicamentum Gratia Probatum. When it arrived in France in 1924, it became popular among doctors under the name “Véritable Huile de Haarlem.” Although its original recipe dates back to the Middle Ages, it still exists today as a dietary supplement.

It consists of flaxseed oil (4%), pine essential oil or turpentine essence (80%), and assimilable, non-oxidised organic sulfur (16%). What made it a minor revolution for its time was that it enabled, for the first time, the transformation of a natural product—sulfur—using the principle of hemisynthesis. Considered toxic in the Middle Ages, inorganic mineral sulfur became, in this oil, surprisingly bioavailable and beneficial to the human body.

What is this “functional food” oil used for?

In Haarlem oil, all the basic components synergistically release their full benefits. But it is above all its remarkable sulfur content that earns it its reputation as a “ superfood” or “functional food.” Its high bioavailability in the formula—that is, its ability to be absorbed by our bodies—was demonstrated in the 1980s by Professor Jacquot of the University of Châteney. That’s why it’s still so popular today!

Why is sulfur so important? Because it is one of the five elements essential to the life of our cells, alongside oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and hydrogen. It plays a role in many biological processes in the body, such as tissue regeneration, antioxidant defense, and proper liver function. Conversely, a sulfur deficiency can cause joint problems, liver and bile duct dysfunction, gastrointestinal discomfort, impaired pancreatic function, or even brittle hair.

Good to know

It’s not just about sulfur! Flaxseed oil, for its part, provides a generous dose of alpha-linolenic acid, the precursor to omega-3 fatty acids—which are too often missing from our diet. As for turpentine, known for its anti-infectious properties, it is said to be particularly beneficial for the ENT system, as well as for the urinary tract and bile ducts.

What are the benefits of genuine Haarlem oil?

For osteoarthritis

This traditional remedy is often described as an internal spa treatment. In fact, spas use sodium- or calcium-sulfur waters for their anti-inflammatory properties. Haarlem oil, a source of biologically available sulfur, is also said to relieve joint pain. By stimulating the production of natural corticosteroids, it is said to curb inflammatory processes while supporting the regeneration of cartilage tissue.

It is sometimes recommended to help with: rheumatic conditions (from simple neck stiffness to polyarthritis), muscle pain, cramps, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

For the liver

According to ORAC tests, Haarlem oil is much more antioxidant-rich than garlic or oranges, for example. It could therefore act as a liver protector, but also support the process of liver and kidney detoxification. It would thus help eliminate toxins, as well as heavy metals. This detox often leads to increased urine production.

Traditionally recommended for: intoxication of the body’s main emunctory organs, gallstones or kidney stones, oxidative stress, and a weakened immune system.

For the stomach

In Dutch tradition, this oil, rich in benefits, was also used as a digestive aid and laxative. It is therefore considered beneficial for managing episodes of gastrointestinal discomfort or imbalance. It is also believed to improve the absorption of certain nutrients and, in doing so, optimise our nutritional balance throughout the “treatment.” It may be helpful in cases of: indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, and constipation.

For the intestines

Medicamentum Gratia Probatum is sometimes compared to an “intestinal disinfectant.” It is said to possess antiparasitic properties, which is why it has traditionally been used as a wormer. A benefit not only for humans, but also for animals! Some breeders and veterinarians use this famous Dutch oil on their dogs, cats, or horses. Examples of situations where it would be beneficial to use it include unwanted intestinal parasites such as roundworms or Giardia.

For the ENT (ear, nose, and throat) area

When it comes to respiratory health, it is primarily the combined action of turpentine oil and sulfur that comes into play. In this case, the famous oil of the alchemists is regularly praised not only for its antiseptic effects, but also for its ability to clear excess secretions that clog the bronchi or sinuses. It is thus believed to prevent ENT discomforts and infections. It is sometimes recommended to help with: sinusitis, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, ear infections, sore throats, and flu-like symptoms. It is also thought to protect the respiratory tract from external aggressors, such as air pollution or tobacco smoke.

For skin and hair

Sulfur plays an important role in the beauty and strength of our skin, hair, and nails. This is because our body absolutely needs it to produce keratin. This is the primary protein that forms our hair, nails, and skin. It also plays a key role in the production of collagen—which gives our skin its youthful, firm, and plump appearance. Haarlem oil may be particularly beneficial in cases of: skin irritation, psoriasis, eczema, acne, rosacea, hair loss, dull hair, or brittle nails.

How should you take your oil capsules?

  1. Opt for a short “course of treatment.” It is generally recommended not to exceed three weeks (= 21 days) of consecutive use.

  2. Drink plenty of water between meals to minimise bloating or other gastrointestinal discomfort, especially during the first few days.

  3. Avoid drinking hot beverages or eating hot food when taking your oil capsules.

  4. Follow the daily dosage of capsules indicated on the label of your dietary supplement. You can usually choose from several dosage options, ranging from a simple preventive “treatment” to an intensive “treatment.”

Precautions for use

According to the literature, Haarlem oil does not appear to have any contraindications or specific precautions for use (except for allergies to eggs, sulfur, or any of its other components). It may occasionally cause bloating, belching, diarrhea, or flatulence during the first few days of the “treatment,” but these minor discomforts are not expected to last. It may even be suitable for children (in suppository form rather than capsules). It has, in fact, been the subject of pediatric studies that have demonstrated its benefits for bronchitis. Nevertheless, as with all dietary supplements, we recommend consulting your doctor before considering supplementation. This precaution also applies to pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Reminder: Dietary supplements are not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet, nor for a healthy lifestyle. Always follow the recommended daily doses.

Expert advice

Don’t forget that sulfur is primarily found in your diet. It exists in the form of oxidised organic sulfur (in sulfur-containing amino acids, which are mainly found in animal proteins) and in the form of non-oxidised organic sulfur (in foods from the Alliaceae family and seafood).
