Niaouli is a tree native to New Caledonia, belonging to the Myrtaceae family. The virtues of Niaouli have been known for a very long time. In some tribes, it is traditionally used to treat ailments, but is also used in the construction of their huts. Soldiers who came to New Caledonia during the Second World War used Niaouli oil to protect themselves from mosquitoes. A powerful anti-bacterial and anti-viral agent, Niaouli essential oil is traditionally used as a natural antiseptic, under the name of Gomenol, in many pharmaceutical preparations for gargling and inhalation, and in toothpastes to purify breath
