What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide belonging to the glycosaminoglycan (or GAG) family, meaning it is a long molecule of repeating disaccharide units made up of D-glucuronic acid and D-N-acetylglucosamine. Depending on the number of disaccharide units, the molecular weight of hyaluronic acid naturally varies between 100 and 10,000 kDa.

What does hyaluronic acid do?

Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in our bodies, particularly in connective tissues such as skin, cartilage, tendons, the cornea and synovial fluid. It is one of the main components of the extracellular matrix, along with collagen, elastin and proteoglycans. It forms a structure that constitutes the 'support tissue' of the skin and other tissues.

The extracellular matrix, often referred to as the 'cement' of our skin tissues, is the structure that binds different cells in the tissue, organises them and maintains cohesion while providing a habitable environment. This matrix comprises fibrous molecules, such as collagen and elastin, which give the structure mechanical strength and elasticity. It also contains hyaluronic acid combined with water, forming a gelatinous substance whose primary role is maintaining moisturisation, preserving the elastic properties of the structure. One of the key properties of hyaluronic acid is its ability to retain water. It can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, which makes it hygroscopic. This allows it to maintain a well-hydrated environment for our cells within the tissues.
