Which Aroma-Zone products should you use or avoid during pregnancy?
During pregnancy, it's not always easy to know which products to use.
Marie-Elise Launay, a midwife, shares her advice on taking care of yourself during pregnancy. Clay, hydrosols, carrier oils, food supplements: here's a round-up of natural solutions for a stress-free pregnancy.

What skincare product can I use during pregnancy?
During pregnancy, a skincare product must be gentle, safe and adapted to the specific needs of the mother-to-be. These may include cosmetic products, nutritional supplements or specially adapted oils, all of which contribute to the mother's well-being without risking the baby's health.
The characteristics of a suitable treatment
A pregnancy product must meet multiple essential criteria:
Natural, safe formulation: no controversial or potentially irritating ingredients.
Gentle, beneficial action: moisturising, protection, prevention of skin discomfort.
Absence of unadvisable substances: certain essential oils, powerful active ingredients or synthetic compounds that can be absorbed by the body.
Why use it and what benefits does it give you?
During pregnancy, the body undergoes a number of changes that can have an impact on the skin, hair and general well-being. Using the right skincare products can provide comfort and protection, while respecting the balance of both mother-to-be and baby.
The benefits of the right products
Skin hydration and elasticity: prevents skin dryness and stretch marks.
Relieves tension: certain oils can help you relax and reduce muscular discomfort.
Supports overall well-being: the right skin care products will provide you with a soothing, comforting routine.
Protection against external damage: reinforces the skin barrier and preserves the skin's natural balance.
By incorporating the right products into their daily routine, expectant mums can look after themselves while respecting the specific needs of pregnancy.

Pregnancy and plant oils
carrier oils are real allies during pregnancy. Natural and inexpensive, they can be used on the face, body and hair without risk.
Ideal for nourishing, softening and protecting the skin, they help prevent the appearance of stretch marks on the body. Well-nourished, moisturised skin will be more supple and able to withstand stretching better over the months.
Don't forget to stop applying oil 3 to 4 days before your ultrasounds (11 weeks, 18 weeks), to improve the quality of the image and measurements.
Here are some carrier oils of interest during pregnancy. Each has its own properties and specificities, so it's up to you to choose according to your needs and affinities. Each of the oils listed below can be used on the face as well as the body, the stomach specifically and the hair.

Musk Rose oil
This powerful regenerating oil helps to prevent stretch marks by softening and toning the skin. It also helps to reduce existing stretch marks by making them less visible, thanks to its powerful healing properties.

Wheat Germ Oil

Argan oil
It prevents skin ageing, promotes the healing of stretch marks, deeply nourishes the skin and prevents dehydration.

Sesame oil
Easily absorbed, deeply nourishing, it helps make skin less dry by reducing flakiness.
Pregnancy and food supplements

Spirulina during pregnancy
No, you can still take spirulina during pregnancy. It is preferable to consume it in powder form, incorporated into a yoghurt or smoothie for better assimilation.
Spirulina is a cyanobacterium that is naturally rich in protein, iron, zinc, magnesium and vitamin B12. It also contains calcium and phosphorus, essential for the formation of the foetus' skeleton.
During pregnancy, iron requirements increase to prevent anaemia and provide oxygen transport in the blood. 5 g of spirulina provides around 30 mg of iron, the recommended intake. Its iron is well assimilated and does not cause digestive problems.
Start gradually: 1 g a day, then increase to 3 g, or even 5 g in cases of anaemia. Combine it with a source of vitamin C (fresh fruit, acerola) to optimise iron absorption.
It also helps to promote hair growth and stimulate milk production after childbirth. Its detoxifying effects require a gradual increase in dose to avoid too strong a reaction.
Before taking any supplements, it is advisable to seek the advice of a health professional.

Turmeric during pregnancy
Curcumin capsules cannot be taken during pregnancy, but turmeric for food use is fine. This root, also known as Indian saffron, contains curcumin, a molecule with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
The European Medicines Agency authorises its use during pregnancy and breast-feeding, but only in the standard dose you would consume it in food: no more than 5 g per day (i.e. one teaspoon), and not on a daily basis. It can be added to soups, steamed vegetables or rice.
Turmeric is known to relieve nausea in the first trimester and reduce heartburn from gastric reflux, which is common at the end of pregnancy. It may also stimulate lactation when combined with fenugreek.
For a pleasant drink, make a golden milk by simmering a cup of milk (vegetable or animal) with a teaspoon of turmeric, honey, a pinch of ginger, pepper, cinnamon and a teaspoon of coconut oil.

Our serums during pregnancy

Hyaluronic acid serum concentrate
Hyaluronic acid is authorised for use on the face during pregnancy. This natural component of the human body is found mainly in our skin, keeping the body supple and hydrated. The natural production of hyaluronic acid decreases from the age of 25 onwards, so adding hyaluronic acid to certain cosmetics can help to improve skin hydration, as well as having healing properties, and is even ideal for preventing stretch marks.

10% Nicotinamide, Copper & Zinc serum concentrate
Not contraindicated during pregnancy, ideal for acne-prone skin, this serum purifies the skin, reduces redness and soothes irritated and inflamed skin.

ORGANIC precious facial oil serum
This combination of plant oils (Cherry, Raspberry, Pomegranate, Hibiscus and Sea Buckthorn) is perfect for nourishing and moisturising your skin while adding radiance. Ideal for a facial massage just before going to bed and as a luminous day treatment.

Bakuchiol serum concentrate
This is a good alternative to retinol, which is not recommended during pregnancy. It is used to prevent the first wrinkles while reducing imperfections. An all-round anti-ageing treatment for all skin types, especially combination, oily or acne-prone skin.

1.5% Vegan collagen serum concentrate

Green clay during pregnancy

Superfine green montmorillonite clay
Green clay has calming, purifying, remineralising and soothing properties that are particularly useful during pregnancy.
To relieve sore areas, you can opt for a poultice. Using a wooden utensil, mix a teaspoon of powdered green clay with water. Once you have a paste, open a compress, apply the clay to the inside and fold over. Apply the clay compress to the sore area (sprained ankle, lower back pain). You can remove it after an hour, and repeat the application with a new poultice 3 times a day. Use cool water for the poultice in case of pain, but make a poultice with hot water for lower back pain.
Green clay can also be used to make a purifying face mask during pregnancy.
Pregnancy: the benefits of hydrosols
Plant hydrosols, sometimes called floral water, are obtained by steam distillation of aromatic plants. They are very gentle and can be used throughout pregnancy, for skincare or to relieve minor ailments.

Organic Roman chamomile hydrosol
This hydrosol is known for revitalising, soothing and purifying the skin. It is used to create soothing treatments for delicate skin and sensitive teeth. It is also reputed to soothe tense people. Soak compresses in chamomile hydrosol and apply to the breasts 3 times a day for 20 minutes to 1 hour, until improvement.

Damask rose hydrosol
In the case of irritated nipples during pregnancy (which can occur when rubbing against clothing), you can apply damask rose hydrosol multiple times a day.

ORGANIC Thyme linalol hydrosol
Purifying and balancing, this hydrosol is ideal for preparing skincare products for blemish-prone and acne-prone skin. Its aromatic scent will enable you to make cosmetics with Provençal notes, and its flavour will enhance your dishes.

Orange Blossom Hydrosol
With its floral fragrance, this hydrosol has toning, revitalising and soothing properties for the skin, and is popular for preparing skincare products for dry skin. It's also used to calm the mind and ease sleep, and in cooking!
Products to avoid during pregnancy
Curcumin
Curcumin in capsules is prohibited during pregnancy because it is highly concentrated, well in excess of what you would find in conventional food. In high doses, it can stimulate uterine contractions, increasing the risk of miscarriage or premature delivery. What's more, its blood-thinning effects could interfere with coagulation, which is not recommended during pregnancy. This is why its use is limited to moderate consumption of turmeric as a spice, as part of a balanced diet.
CBD oil and pregnancy
CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the main components of cannabis, alongside THC, a substance that alters the state of consciousness and crosses the placental barrier, potentially affecting the baby. Although CBD is used for medicinal purposes and has been trialled in France since 2020 (decision by the ANSM), its effects on pregnancy and newborn babies remain insufficiently studied. As a precautionary measure, it is therefore recommended that CBD be avoided during pregnancy. Smoking CBD is also not recommended, as it is often mixed with tobacco. The MILDECA reminds us that you should not touch alcohol, tobacco and cannabis from the moment you become pregnant.
Precautions for use
For products applied to the skin, always carry out a tolerance test before use, especially for serums, carrier oils and hydrosols. Some, such as St John's wort, are photosensitising and should be used with caution.
For supplements, stick to the recommended doses.
For hair colouring, opt for natural plant dyes with no metallic salts, and carry out a test on a small area of skin beforehand.
Green clay can be used as a mask, but only for a limited time to avoid drying out. Do not ingest without medical advice.
Before using any product during pregnancy, ask a health professional for advice to ensure it is compatible with your situation.
Expert advice
To maximise the benefits of skincare during pregnancy, stick to a regular routine: apply your oils and hydrosols after showering, on skin that is still slightly damp, for better absorption. When taking supplements, remember to divide your doses (e.g. spirulina or turmeric) throughout the day for better assimilation and optimal digestive comfort.
