A small evergreen shrub from the Lamiaceae family, thyme is inevitably associated with the Mediterranean garrigue region. In Provence and Languedoc, it is known by the lilting accents of Occitan: farigoule, farigoulette, barigoule, and others.

It has been used for centuries in cooking as a flavouring, and in medicine to aid digestion and prevent infection.

According to Greek mythology, thyme was born from the tears of beautiful Helen during the Trojan War. Thyme has long been a symbol of courage andelegance for the Greek people. There are around seven different chemotypes of thyme (distributed between southern France and Spain), with the corresponding essential oils having different therapeutic properties.

The 'linalool' chemotype, steam distilled to make this hydrosol, is known as 'sweet thyme' because of its delicate scent and gentle , non-aggressive action on the skin.

Renowned for its antibacterial and antifungal properties, linalool thyme essential oil gives its hydrosol purifying properties, making it traditionally used to relieve infections, both for oral use and topical application.

I use Thyme linalool hydrosol with Mountain Savory and Noble Chamomile (Roman) hydrosols as a preventative anti-parasitic treatment for my little companions (Danièle Festy's essential oils bible). Unfortunately, Savory hydrosol has been out of stock for several weeks (a quarter).
