Cosmetic ingredient
INCI designation: Hamamelis virginiana water
Concentration
To make 1 litre of hydrosol, 0.2 kilos of flowering tops are needed, known as the 1:5 ratio. This lower extraction ratio than that required for most other hydrosols (1:1) is necessary because this hydrosol is obtained from dried flowers that are much richer in aroma. In this case, this ratio means we get a pleasant olfactory result and ensures that the hydrosol keeps well.
Other names
Witch hazel, golden spider tree, witch hazel water

Native to North America and introduced to Europe in the 18th century, Witch Hazel is a common shrub in the forests of Quebec and the north-eastern United States, where it easily withstands sub-zero temperatures. Its leaves resemble those of the hazel tree, and its name “Witch Hazel” is thought to come from a phonetic distortion of the Old English word wiche, meaning “bending” or “flexible,” later transformed into “witch.” Its curious yellow, spider-like flowers bloom at the same time as the fruit, in late autumn and winter.
Remedies based on Witch Hazel extracts are widely used in European pharmacopoeia to combat venous insufficiency, phlebitis, haemorrhoids and dermatological disorders…
Its leaves and flowers contain a very small proportion of essential oil, so they are only distilled to extractWitch Hazel water, which has been used for generations for its soothing, circulatory and astringent properties.

EO = Essential Oil
VO = Carrier Oil or Macerated Oil
Procedure: Add 4 to 5 tablespoons of Witch Hazel hydrosol alone, or mixed with Cypress hydrosol, to a basin of warm water. If necessary, add coarse salt (about 150 g).
Baking soda: 100 g
Maize flour: 50 g
Citric acid: 50 g
Sesame or Jojoba oil: 10 drops
Sweet orange essential oil: 8 drops
Seville orange essential oil: 5 drops
Grapefruit essential oil: 2 drops
Method: In 2 tablespoons of bicarbonate, mix the carrier oils and essential oils drop by drop. Pour the remaining bicarbonate, flour and citric acid into a bowl. Add the first mixture to the oils, stirring vigorously for a few minutes. Now comes the hard part: Add the hydrosol very gently, spritz after spritz, stirring well and leaving half a minute between sprays to avoid a foaming reaction. The powder needs about 30 spritzes to reach the desired moisture content. This quantity is a guide only. It is ready when the powder is barely damp. Fill the moulds, pressing well. Leave to dry for 24 hours before carefully removing from the mould, and a further 24 hours before use. Store in a very dry place to avoid bomb sabotage.
Kalahari melon seed carrier oil: 25 ml
Witch hazel hydrosol (astringent): 15 ml
Mimosa wax: 1 g
Soya lecithin: 1 teaspoon
Vegetable glycerine: 1 teaspoon
Green mandarin essential oil: 8 drops
Palmarosa essential oil: 8 drops
Lemon essential oil (antiseptic): 4 drops
Grapefruit seed extract: 6 drops
Vitamin E: 2 drops
Procedure : Pour the melon seed carrier oil and mimosa wax into a bowl and heat over a bain-marie. Remove from heat as soon as the wax has melted. Gradually incorporate the Witch hazel hydrosol in small streams. Add the soy lecithin to give a nice consistency and the vegetable glycerin for its softening effects. Finally, add the essential oils, natural vitamin E and grapefruit seed extract, mixing well before pouring the cream into the roll-on bottle.
20 ml jojoba oil
4 g beeswax
10 ml hamamelis hydrosol
3 drops rosemary verbenone essential oil
3 drops tea tree essential oil
3 drops grapefruit seed extract
Method: Melt the wax in the carrier oil in a bain-marie. When the wax has melted, remove from the heat and drizzle in the hydrosol, whisking until the mixture has cooled. Add the remaining ingredients while continuing to whisk. Leave to set for 30 minutes in the fridge.
8 ml macadamia carrier oil
7 ml hazelnut carrier oil
5 g beeswax
30 ml Hamamelis hydrosol
0.3 g borax (an amount on the tip of a knife)
9 drops palmarosa essential oil
8 drops rosemary verbenone essential oil
Directions: Melt the wax in the carrier oils in a bain-marie. Heat the hydrosol in a bain-marie, then remove from the heat and dissolve the borax in it. When the wax has melted, gradually add the aqueous phase and whisk until the mixture has cooled. Add the remaining ingredients while continuing to stir. Keep refrigerated.
Important Aroma-Zone note: borax is a potentially irritating raw material that is tricky to use. We recommend replacing it with an Aroma-Zone emulsifying wax to obtain a more stable emulsion.

Pour the mixture into a small sterilised bottle and place in the fridge to cool completely.
