What is Bakuchiol?
The new natural active ingredient that's as effective as retinol
Bakuchiol is a natural active ingredient extracted from the seeds of the babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia). Also known as 'bakuchi', this plant is native to the Himalayas and has long been known in Ayurvedic medicine, where it is traditionally used to treat skin problems.
Today, the bakuchiol active ingredient extracted from this plant is recognised as the only plant-based alternative to retinol that is both effective and non-irritating. Obtained by synthesis, retinol is widely used in dermo-cosmetics, both in anti-ageing products and acne treatments. It is well known for its formidable effectiveness, as well as for its side effects and contraindications.
Proven efficacy
Studies have shown that natural bakuchiol acts on the same mechanisms as retinol on the skin, in particular protecting the components that make up the skin's structure and firmness. Bakuchiol also has powerful antioxidant effects, combating oxidative stress linked to UV rays, smoking and pollution. Finally, bakuchiol also calms the inflammation involved in ageing and acne.
A safe, non-irritating and non-photosensitising active ingredient
Unlike retinol, bakuchiol is non-irritating, non-drying and well tolerated by the skin. What's more, unlike many bakuchiol oils or babchi oils on the market (which contain only a small proportion of the active molecule), the bakuchiol we use is the active molecule. It is highly purified to eliminate all traces of the phototoxic compounds (psoralen) present in the plant.
