SOD, or Superoxide Dismutase, is an antioxidant enzyme that is naturally present in living organisms and plays a vital role in neutralising free radicals in the body. It is in fact the most powerful primary antioxidant in our bodies. It occurs naturally in certain foods and is also produced by our cells. Its natural synthesis by the body diminishes with age, and it is also worthwhile supplementing it in people exposed to pollution, tobacco, the sun or other factors that increase the production of free radicals, such as intense physical exercise in athletes.
