Avena sativa is an annual plant in the Poaceae (grass) family. Originally from Asia, its cultivation spread rapidly, particularly in Northern Europe, because it is an undemanding cereal: it is easily satisfied with poor soils and tolerates cold, wet weather. It is attracting growing interest because of its exceptional nutritional and dietary value, but for a long time it was relegated to animal feed, except in Scotland and Northern Europe where the soil was too poor and the climate too cold to grow wheat.
"That's why England has such good horses and Scotland such admirable men", the Scots are said to have retorted to the English disdain for the grain they fed their horses. The oats used to produce this oil are grown in Sweden without the use of pesticides. Before the oil can be extracted, the grains have to be heat-treated to deactivate the lipases, enzymes that would otherwise break down the oil. The oat grains are then extracted with plant ethanol (derived from Finnish pine trees) to produce a concentrated lipid extract, which is then purified to remove starches and waxes.
This particular extraction method produces a carrier oil that is very rich in sterols, tocotrienols and tocopherols (vitamin E), as well as ceramides and phospholipids, polar lipids that are rarely found in carrier oils obtained by pressing. These components, which are similar to the skin's natural lipids, give oat oil excellent skin compatibility and optimal softening and restructuring properties. It helps to regenerate the skin's hydrolipidic film, helping to maintain the skin's moisture levels. Extra-gentle oat oil is traditionally used to care for sensitive and reactive skin. Incorporated into your emulsions, oily serums or balms, it soothes, repairs, nourishes and protects delicate skin. Rich in antioxidants, particularly vitamin E, it also helps to combat skin ageing, is easily absorbed by the skin and is popular for its silky feel and soft oat fragrance.
