The area around the eyes, a part of the body where the skin is most delicate, is the first to show signs of lack of sleep, tiredness, stress, ageing, and dehydration. It is therefore essential to pamper it with suitable skincare products to prevent the appearance of fine lines, dark circles, or puffiness, which make the face look aged and tired. Caring for this area with natural plant-based oils that have nourishing, smoothing, and decongesting properties is a good way to pamper and protect this fragile and delicate part of the face.

Why Should We Look After the Skin Around Our Eyes?

Caring for the delicate area around the eyes remains crucial to prevent the appearance of signs of skin ageing and to maintain a youthful, radiant look. This area, which is particularly thin, lacks sebaceous glands and is exposed to external aggressors, is prone to dehydration and the development of fine lines over time.

By regularly incorporating specific products such as plant-based oils, moisturisers, or nutrient-enriched serums into your beauty and skincare routine, you can improve the skin’s elasticity and reduce the signs of ageing and fatigue.

Furthermore, protecting the eye area from damage caused by UV rays and pollution helps to preserve its youthful appearance. Adopting a dedicated eye care routine can therefore help to prevent visible signs of ageing around the eyes.

What Are the Benefits of Plant-Based Oils for the Eye Area?

Thanks to their moisturising, nourishing, and smoothing properties, plant-based oils provide deep hydration, alleviating dryness, and helping to restore the elasticity of the skin around the eyes. Plant-based oils can help to preserve this delicate area of the face by:

  • Maintaining Hydration: Lacking sebaceous glands, the eye area is often prone to dryness, which can lead to the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Plant-based oils, rich in essential fatty acids and active ingredients, help maintain the skin’s moisture levels, thereby helping to reduce dryness and improve the elasticity of this fragile area

  • Deeply Nourish the Skin: Plant-based oils, such as sweet almond oil, rosehip oil, prickly pear oil, hemp oil, grapeseed oil and rice bran oil, contain numerous active ingredients such as vitamins and antioxidants that nourish and protect the delicate skin around the eyes

  • Preventing the Signs of Ageing: Plant-based oils can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles thanks to their nourishing and moisturising properties. For example, argan oil, avocado oil, and prickly pear oil are renowned for their anti-ageing benefits

  • Reducing Inflammation: Certain plant oils, such as calendula oil (oily macerate) and Calophyllum inophyllum oil, have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce puffiness and dark circles around the eyes

  • Protecting Against External Aggressors: Certain plant-based oils, such as jojoba oil, can form a protective barrier on the skin, helping to prevent moisture loss and protect the skin from external aggressors

What Are the Best Plant-Based Oils for the Eye Area?

The eye area deserves special attention in our skincare routine, and plant-based oils can help nourish, soften, and smooth this delicate, thin, and sensitive area.

Quality Criteria for a Plant-Based Oil for the Eye Area

Always choose a virgin oil, which is pure, unprocessed, 100% natural, extracted by first cold-pressing (extraction method), and sourced from plants grown using organic farming where possible. Opt for high-quality plant oils with a light texture so as not to weigh down the thin, delicate skin around the eyes.

Avoid refined oils, which, unlike virgin oils, are extracted using chemical processes, most commonly involving solvents. Indeed, after refining, these refined oils lose almost all of their active ingredients.

How Should You Use Plant-Based Oils Around the Eyes?

Using plant-based oils around the eyes is a gentle way to care for this sensitive area. Once you’ve chosen a plant-based oil suited to your skin type and specific needs, here are a few steps to follow to incorporate plant-based oils into your eye care routine:

  1. Cleanse Your Face: Before applying the oil, make sure your face is clean. Use a gentle cleanser to remove impurities and make-up, then gently pat the skin around your eyes dry

  2. Use a Small Amount of Product: Plant-based oils are concentrated, so one or two drops are usually enough. You can adjust the amount as needed

  3. Use Gentle, Soft Movements: To aid absorption and stimulate circulation, use light circular movements or gently pat the area with your fingers. Use your ring finger or a cotton bud to apply the oil around the eyes. Avoid direct contact with the eyes to prevent irritation

  4. Choose the Right Time: Ideally, apply the plant-based oil in the evening, after cleansing your face. This allows the oil to work overnight to deeply nourish the skin

If you notice any unusual or unpleasant reaction a few hours after applying your oil as an eye serum, stop using it and speak to your doctor.

If you have any specific concerns, allergies or skin problems, we recommend that you consult a healthcare professional or a dermatologist before changing your skincare routine.

Can Active Ingredients Be Added to Plant-Based Oils to Care for the Eye Area?

We would strongly advise that, in addition to using plant-based oils, you opt for products containing moisturising active ingredients to combat dryness and sagging around the eyes, as well as draining and decongesting active ingredients to tackle the appearance of dark circles and puffiness. If you are prone to pigmented dark circles, we recommend skincare products rich in depigmenting and brightening active ingredients instead.
