The lipids found on the skin's surface (sebum) form a natural protective barrier against external damage. Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) and vitamin E are among the few natural antioxidants that are lipophilic. They are naturally present in the skin and act in synergy to protect the lipids in the sebum against oxidative stress, especially when exposed to the sun.
The skin's intrinsic concentration of Coenzyme Q10 and vitamin E decreases considerably with age, making the skin more sensitive to UV rays in particular. It is therefore beneficial to supplement the skin with these 2 essential elements.
Recent in vitro and in vivo studies show that the use of coenzyme Q10 is also effective in protecting keratinocytes (skin cells) against the harmful effects of stress induced by UV irradiation: protection against the specific activation of phosphotyrosine kinases, protection of DNA, etc.
Coenzyme Q10 combined with vitamin E also significantly reduces collagenase expression in skin fibroblasts after UVA irradiation, thereby limiting collagen degradation caused by UVA irradiation.
Finally, the same studies show that regular long-term application of a product containing coenzyme Q10 can reduce the depth of wrinkles, particularly around the eyes.
Coenzyme Q10 therefore appears to be a first-choice anti-ageing and protective active ingredient.
For optimum synergy, we have a combination of coenzyme Q10 and vitamin E diluted in squalane. The structure of squalane is similar to the squalene in human sebum, so it has excellent affinity with the skin and improves the bioavailability of the active ingredients, while helping to restore the skin's lipid barrier.
