What is helichrysum?

helichrysum, or Helichrysum italicum, from the Asteraceae family, is a small plant native to the Mediterranean region. It is now found in various regions such as the Iberian Peninsula, the Balkans and around the Adriatic Sea.

Adapted to arid environments, it grows quite easily in dry, sandy and generally fairly poor soil, in the form of small bushes around 50 cm high. Helichrysum, which flowers from May to August, has grey evergreen foliage and yellow flowers with a powerful fragrance, reminiscent to some of curry. Often called the helichrysum, this pretty nickname comes from the surprising longevity of its flowers once picked, which retain their characteristic colour and scent for a long time. The word "Helichrysum" comes from the Greek words "helios" meaning "sun", and "chrysos" meaning "gold", in reference to its yellow flowers.

helichrysum is often used as an ornamental, particularly in bouquets of dried flowers, because the flowers keep so well. Recently, it has been "rediscovered" and highlighted for its oflactive properties, thanks in particular to its essential oil, in the fields of perfumery and cosmetics.
