Cellulite affects nearly 9 out of 10 women. More commonly known as ‘orange peel skin’, it refers to a build-up of fat cells beneath the skin, giving it that characteristic dimpled appearance. To minimise its appearance and tone the figure, anti-cellulite oils are invaluable allies. Find out which ones to choose to achieve smoother, firmer skin.

In short:

• Anti-cellulite oils help to smooth the appearance of dimpled skin by promoting drainage, stimulating microcirculation, aiding fat breakdown and firming the tissues. Your choice depends on your cellulite type and desired result: a smoother silhouette, toned skin, or lighter-feeling legs.

• A specific routine maximises their benefits: after showering, apply approximately one teaspoon per thigh, then use circular movements and a kneading-and-rolling technique for about 5 minutes per area. Consistency matters more than one long weekly session: apply daily for 4 to 6 weeks to assess the effects, adjusting movements and intensity to your skin’s sensitivity.

• Essential oils require precautions, particularly during pregnancy, whilst breastfeeding, or in cases of irritated skin or oestrogen-dependent conditions. The article details the specific contraindications for grapefruit, Virginia cedar and the various treatments, as well as the skin test to be carried out 48 hours beforehand.

What Are the Different Types of Cellulite?

There are three types of cellulite: adipose cellulite, aqueous cellulite and fibrous cellulite. Often linked to being slightly overweight or a tendency to store fat, adipose cellulite is the most common. It involves an accumulation of subcutaneous fat. The skin remains supple and painless, but takes on a dimpled appearance. Aqueous cellulite, on the other hand, results from poor blood and lymphatic circulation, combined with water retention. Water and waste products are not properly eliminated and accumulate in the tissues, causing the skin to swell and take on a flaccid, orange-peel appearance. Finally, fibrous cellulite is long-standing, so-called ‘ingrained’ adipose cellulite. Over time, the skin hardens and may take on a purplish colour, or even become painful to the touch.

What Is an Anti-Cellulite Oil Used For?

An anti-cellulite oil can work in different ways:

  • Draining: It promotes lymphatic drainage, an essential process for eliminating excess water and metabolic waste trapped in adipose tissue. This decongestant action helps to reduce the water retention responsible for aqueous cellulite, as well as the puffy appearance of the skin

  • Stimulating blood circulation: By activating microcirculation, it improves tissue oxygenation and promotes the elimination of waste products

  • Breaking down fat: Certain anti-cellulite oils act directly on fat stores and promote the breakdown of fat cells. They help to dissolve the fat deposits responsible for the dimpled appearance of the skin. This targeted action is particularly effective against adipose cellulite

  • Firming the tissues: Anti-cellulite oil helps to tighten the skin and improve its elasticity. By strengthening the tone of the skin tissues, it helps to gradually smooth out the ‘orange peel’ appearance and reshape the figure

  • Facilitating massage: Its fluid texture facilitates specific massage techniques, such as the ‘palpate-and-roll’ method, draining pressure and all other anti-cellulite massage techniques. These mechanical movements help to dislodge entrenched dimples and stimulate blood circulation. The anti-cellulite oil glides smoothly over the skin without tugging or causing irritation, ensuring prolonged and effective massages.

Which Active Ingredients Should You Look For in an Anti-Cellulite Oil?

Two main groups of active ingredients are particularly sought after in an anti-cellulite oil: those that drain and reduce fat deposits, and those that firm and smooth the skin.

Draining active ingredients:

Contraindications: This essential oil is not recommended in cases of oestrogen-dependent conditions, such as mastosis, endometriosis, fibroids or oestrogen-dependent cancer (breast, ovary, endometrium).

Contraindications: This essential oil is photosensitising. Do not expose yourself to sunlight or UV rays for at least 8 hours after topical application. For cosmetic use, we recommend grapefruit essential oil free from furocoumarins. May cause irritation: Always dilute thoroughly for topical use. Do not use during pregnancy, whilst breastfeeding, or on children under 6 years of age. Grapefruit essential oil is sensitive to oxidation: store in a cool (you may store it in the fridge), dry place away from light. Avoid contact with the eyes.

How to Apply the Oil for Real Results on Cellulite

  • The ‘kneading and rolling’ technique is the ideal way to apply an anti-cellulite oil. To achieve real results, consistency is key.

  • After showering, on dry or slightly damp skin, take a small amount of oil per area (around 1 teaspoon for one thigh, for example) and warm it between your hands

  • Spread the product over the area to be massaged using circular movements

  • Move on to the ‘knead-and-roll’ technique by grasping a fold of skin between your fingers and thumbs. Pinch gently, then roll this fold under your fingers, moving slowly upwards – for example, from the knee, via the top of the thigh and the lower part of the buttock, to reach the top of the buttock.

  • Move gradually, without staying in one place. Spend around 5 minutes on each area.

  • Adjust the pressure of the massage according to your sensitivity. It should feel invigorating but bearable. Ideally, perform this kneading and rolling technique every day for 4 to 6 weeks to start seeing real results on the appearance of cellulite. A short 5- to 10-minute massage every day is better than one very long session once a week.

Which Habits Can Help Reduce the Appearance of Cellulite?

To reduce the appearance of cellulite, the aim is to ‘break down’ the dimpled skin and boost blood and lymphatic circulation. As well as using the ‘kneading a rolling’ technique, you can also try:

  • Dry brushing: This helps to stimulate blood and lymphatic circulation and smooths the appearance of the skin. On dry skin before showering, brush using circular movements followed by upward strokes from the feet to the thighs, focusing on dimpled areas.

  • Lymphatic drainage: Whether manual or using methods such as the Renata or Vodder techniques at a beauty salon, this is particularly effective for water-retention-related cellulite.

  • Cold and cryolipolysis: At a beauty salon, cryolipolysis targets localised fat deposits and can help reduce some of the subcutaneous fat. At home, you can finish your shower with a splash of cold water or alternate between hot and cold water on areas prone to cellulite. Cold improves vascular tone and can also help relieve the sensation of heavy legs.

  • Physical activity: ‘Uphill’ endurance sports, such as walking, cycling, climbing stairs or hiking, help to burn fat, stimulate blood circulation and gradually tone the figure.

Combined with a balanced diet and good hydration, all these measures enhance the long-term benefits of anti-cellulite oils.

Precautions

Some anti-cellulite oils may contain essential oils. These are not recommended for children or for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Also, before using a cosmetic product for the first time, do an allergy test on the inside of your elbow to check for any reaction. If in doubt, contact your GP. Anti-cellulite oils are for external use only. Do not swallow them or apply them to mucous membranes, the eyes or irritated skin.

Precautions for essential oils

Essential oils are powerful natural concentrates. Please refer carefully to the intended uses and precautions for use on each product information sheet. Store them in a suitable glass bottle, away from light and air. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use on pregnant or breastfeeding women, or on children under 6 years of age. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. Please refer to the general safety information sheet for essential oils as well as the specific information sheet for each essential oil.
