Carapa procera, known in Senegal as Touloucouna, is a large tree in the Meliaceae family, related to Andiroba and Neem. It can grow up to 30 m high and is abundant in West and Central Africa, in both rainforests and savannahs. It is of great cultural and medicinal importance to local populations, who use all parts of the plant (bark, leaves, resin, seeds) for various purposes, mainly medicinal and magical, but also for cosmetic purposes and to protect wood against termites.

In southern Senegal, in the Basse Casamance region, the oil is traditionally produced by the Diola community. Only menopausal women will collect Touloucouna seeds from wild trees, then extract the oil in boiling water after grinding the kernels to a paste.

The oil obtained is reputed to soothe muscle and joint discomfort, and is traditionally used to soothe skin with atopic tendencies. It is also known for its pest repellent and insect repellent properties. It is traditionally rubbed or massaged into the skin, or used to make soap.

Very rich in active unsaponifiable compounds, this artisanally-produced oil is traditionally recommended for skin and scalps with atopic tendencies.

Rich in soothing active ingredients, it also makes an excellent massage base for muscle or joint discomfort. A truly magical oil!
