How Can You Strengthen Your Hair Naturally?

Strengthening your hair should be a habit for all hair types, from straight to tightly coiled. By reinforcing the hair fibre, you give yourself the best chance of maintaining dense, resilient hair. To do so, turn to keratin-like active ingredients, vegetable oils such as rosemary and chébé, or plant powders, particularly Kapoor Kachli. For even greater benefits, you can also support hair health from within through strengthening dietary supplements. Here are our tips for maintaining vibrant hair and naturally reducing breakage.

In short:

  • Strengthening hair naturally helps maintain dense and resilient hair, regardless of hair type, thanks to well-known active ingredients such as vegetable oils (rosemary, chébé), plant powders (Kapoor Kachli), and keratin-like ingredients.

  • Its effectiveness relies on a routine combining external care (oil treatments, masks, plant powders) and internal support through targeted dietary supplements, with specific application frequencies and synergies to optimise hair vitality, as detailed in the article.

  • The article also highlights precautions to take when using new natural active ingredients for the first time.

What Does "Strengthening Your Hair" Mean?

Strengthening your hair means caring for it in a way that preserves its elasticity, suppleness, and natural resistance to traction. In other words, it means taking action to prevent and limit breakage, which can compromise your hair growth goals and result in uneven lengths.

Hair that is strong and elastic is healthy hair. Maintaining this elasticity is important for both straight and curly hair. In textured hair, it is especially key to achieving well-defined, bouncy, and dynamic curls.

This resilience mainly occurs in the cortex, where the keratin fibrils are located. This protein is essential for strengthening hair, as its quality guarantees its strength. At the same time, it is also necessary to act on the surface of the hair by adding oil. This helps to lubricate the hair, protecting it from external aggressions. Properly lubricated hair is virtually impermeable, able to preserve the integrity of its keratin. It is also much shinier!

Why Might it be Beneficial to Strengthen Your Hair?

Our hair is strong, but not invincible. Over time and depending on the treatments we subject it to, it can become fragile. Many seemingly harmless habits (at least at first glance) can damage it. This is the case with daily washing, overuse of hair dryers, coloring or bleaching, and excessive use of hair products—especially if they are unsuitable for your hair type.

This damage to the hair fiber usually begins with the stripping of the cuticle. The protective lipids that form a barrier around the hair (including ceramides and 18-MEA lipids) gradually disappear. It's as if the hair were left completely bare! Without its natural shield, it quickly becomes duller and drier, with the infamous straw-like effect.

The hair's keratin scales become eroded and separate, allowing various damaging factors to penetrate, like a wall with holes in it. These factors then reach the cortex, or the core of the hair. There, they threaten its strength by attacking its keratin fiber structure, in particular by breaking its bonds. At this stage, the lengths begin to break and the ends split.

Good to know: Very fragile and damaged hair may be beyond repair. Don't wait until it's too late to take action. Instead, try to strengthen your hair every day!

How can you tell if hair is weakened?

  • Your hair seems devitalised. It has lost its softness and ability to reflect light. It seems to have thinned out, with split ends or rat tailing.

  • Your hair lacks volume. This is probably because your hair is breaking or thinning towards the ends, causing an apparent loss of density.

  • Your hair is difficult to style. It is knotty, very frizzy and breaks when styled. It may also tend to build up static electricity.

What Hair Routine Should You Follow to Naturally Strengthen Your Hair?

Good to know: This routine is ideal for hair that is shedding, fragile, or prone to breakage. Follow it every other wash to help strengthen your lengths and support healthy hair growth.

1. Massage your scalp using our scalp massage brush. Apply a few drops of oil (Chébé, Rosemary, or Fenugreek) to the roots. Then make circular motions, gently rubbing the bristles over your scalp. Leave on for 30 minutes.

2. Wash your hair with our Palm-Free Neutral Shampoo Base. We recommend customising your bottle with Provitamin B5 (up to 6.5 ml per 250 ml of shampoo). Shampoo once or twice, depending on your preference.

3. Apply our Hair Mask Base to your towel-dried hair. Here too, customise your product. You can choose Provitamin B5 (up to 5 mL per 200 mL of mask) or Organic Castor Oil (up to 10 mL per 200 mL of mask).

4. Complete your strengthening routine with our Anti-Hair Loss Serum with Peptides & Pea Extract. After showering, gently towel-dry your hair. Apply 1 to 2 pipettes to your scalp and massage with your fingertips until fully absorbed. You can also use the scalp massage brush from step 1 to help with application.

What Everyday Habits Can Help Strengthen Your Hair?

  1. Scalp massage: Gently massaging the scalp helps stimulate blood circulation, which can support healthy hair growth.

  2. Avoid excessive heat: Limit the use of heated styling tools (hairdryers, straighteners, curling irons), or apply a heat protectant before use.

  3. Brush hair correctly: Brushing too frequently can weaken the hair. It is recommended to use a gentle brush and detangle carefully, preferably when the hair is wet, using a wide-tooth comb.

  4. Trim the ends regularly: Cutting split ends helps prevent breakage from travelling further up the hair shaft, supporting the growth of stronger, healthier-looking hair.

Expert Tips

Nettle is one of the best-known traditional remedies for strengthening hair. This is because it contains a high amount of complete proteins, vitamins (notably vitamin C and provitamin A), minerals, and trace elements (including iron). All of these nutrients help support stronger and longer hair growth.A traditional hair lotion recipe suggests macerating 60 g of dried nettle rhizome and an equal amount of oregano in 1 L of alcohol for one month, then applying it as a scalp rub. Another option is nettle powder, which is convenient for creating a wide range of strengthening cosmetics or even dietary supplements.
