Astrocaryum murumuru, commonly known as Murumuru or Muru Muru, is a palm tree native to Amazonia. It grows preferentially in damp soil on the banks of rivers or in swamps. Over 10 metres high, its leaves can easily reach 4 metres in length.
Its bunches of fruit are unique in that they grow upwards, and can each bear up to 300 fruits!
Its fruit, red when ripe, contains a kernel which, when pressed, produces a very hard butter ideal for making lipsticks. Its composition also contains a high concentration of lauric acid. With a very low molecular weight, this fatty acid has the particularity of having a very strong affinity for hair proteins. Murumuru butter is therefore an essential ingredient in nourishing treatments for dry, damaged hair.
