Strawberry legs: what are they?

The term "strawberry legs" refers to the appearance of small dark or reddish spots on the skin of the legs, giving them an uneven appearance. This phenomenon is mainly caused by enlarged or clogged pores, often visible after shaving or hair removal. It can be caused by theaccumulation of sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria inside the hair follicles, creating a grainy texture reminiscent of the surface of a strawberry. This phenomenon is frequently associated with hyperkeratinization (keratosis pilaris), ingrown hairs or inflammation of the hair follicles (folliculitis), which can accentuate the rough and pigmented appearance of the skin.

What causes them?

The causes of strawberry skin can vary:

Clogged pores: When pores accumulate sebum, dead skin cells, and impurities, they become more visible and take on a dark hue. This is exacerbated after shaving or waxing, when dilated pores are exposed to air, promoting oxidation.

Follicular keratosis: Keratosis pilaris is a common, benign skin condition that causes a buildup of keratin in hair follicles, forming small, rough bumps on the skin. It can contribute to the appearance of strawberry legs by creating an uneven texture and dark spots on the skin.

Folliculitis: Folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicles, often caused by a bacterial or fungal infection. It can occur after shaving or hair removal, when the skin is irritated or damaged, leading to the appearance of small red bumps or dark spots on the skin.

Inappropriate hair removal techniques: A dull razor, dry shaving, or improper hair removal can irritate the skin and make pores more visible. A hair cut under the skin can also irritate the hair follicle and create a dark spot. These practices increase the risk of ingrown hairs, irritation, and dark spots, and can thus accentuate the appearance of strawberry legs.

Dry skin: Skin that is not sufficiently hydrated is more vulnerable to irritation and imperfections. Dryness also promotes the buildup of dead skin cells, which can clog pores and accentuate the appearance of strawberry legs.

What are the associated symptoms?

The main characteristics of strawberry legs are:

  • A spotty or pitted appearance on the skin of the legs (small dark spots on the legs)

  • Enlarged and darkened pores

  • A grainy and uneven skin texture (small red or black bumps)

  • A feeling of dryness or tightness

  • Redness and irritation after shaving or hair removal

  • Possible appearance of ingrown hairs

  • Sometimes: itching or mild inflammation

Our natural solutions to reduce strawberry legs

The organic sugar scrub: for gentle exfoliation

The buildup of dead skin cells clogs pores and accentuates the appearance of "strawberry legs." Exfoliation helps remove these impurities while stimulating cell renewal.

Choose this organic sugar body scrub, enriched with argan, cotton, and sweet almond oils. Its gel-like, oily texture effectively exfoliates without irritating the skin and transforms into a milky veil when rinsed off. Apply to damp skin, massage in circular motions, then rinse with clean water. Moisturize immediately to maximize results. Use 1 to 2 times a week.

The Oat and Ceramide Lipid-Restoring Balm: to nourish and restore the skin barrier

Dry, fragile skin is more prone to roughness and unevenness. This lipid-replenishing balm, rich in ceramides and oat oil, intensely nourishes, soothes redness, and strengthens the skin barrier.

Apply daily to clean, dry skin, focusing on areas prone to strawberry legs. Its fluid, enveloping texture absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy film. For enhanced results, gently massage until fully absorbed.

The active ingredient plant-based salicylic acid: to purify and unclog pores

Salicylic acid, derived from black willow bark, is a gentle exfoliant that penetrates deeply to unclog pores and reduce the appearance of rough skin.

Add a few drops of the plant-based salicylic acid to a suitable neutral base (lotion, gel, cream) and apply to dry skin after showering. Avoid direct sun exposure after application and use 2 to 3 times a week.

The all-purpose cream: to nourish and soothe the skin

This 100% natural multi-purpose cream, packed with organic aloe vera juice and enriched with jojoba and calendula oils and cocoa butter, nourishes and softens all skin types, especially dry and dehydrated skin. Its melt-in texture absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy film.

After showering, apply a small amount to slightly damp skin and massage until absorbed. You can also customize it by adding a few drops of targeted active ingredients, such as plant-based salicylic acid for gentle exfoliation or a plant oil to enhance its nourishing effect.

dry brushing: to stimulate circulation and exfoliate naturally

dry brushing gently exfoliates the skin while stimulating blood and lymphatic circulation, thereby promoting optimal cell renewal.

Before showering, use your natural-fiber brush to make gentle circular motions, moving upward from the ankles toward the thighs. After showering, apply a lipid-replenishing balm or a nourishing oil to lock in moisture.

How can you prevent this problem?

To minimize the appearance of strawberry legs and achieve smoother skin, here are our tips to follow and our tailored routine combining gentle hair removal, hydration, and skincare:

  1. Step 1: Prepare the skin before hair removal

Exfoliate your skin 24 hours before hair removal to remove dead skin cells and prevent ingrown hairs. Moisturize your skin daily to soften the hair and make it easier to remove.

  2. Step 2: Use the right hair removal technique

Use a clean, sharp razor to minimize nicks. Apply a moisturizing shaving gel or foam to protect the skin and reduce irritation. Shave in the direction of hair growth to avoid skin trauma. Change the razor blade regularly to ensure a clean shave and prevent bacterial growth.

  3. Step 3: Moisturize and soothe the skin after hair removal

Apply a moisturizing cream or oil after each hair removal session to restore the skin’s hydrolipidic film. Choose products containing aloe vera, shea butter, or jojoba oil for their soothing and restorative properties.

Avoid hot water immediately after hair removal, as it can increase redness and skin dehydration. Opt for a lukewarm shower instead.

  4. Step 4: Exfoliate regularly

Use a gentle scrub once or twice a week to unclog pores and prevent the buildup of dead skin cells, or use an exfoliant suited to your skin type: mechanical (fine grains) or chemical (enzymes, fruit acids).

  5. Step 5: Adopt certain habits

Wear loose-fitting cotton clothing to minimize friction and skin irritation. Avoid going over the same spot multiple times with the razor so as not to weaken the skin barrier.

If ingrown hairs persist despite these precautions, consider an alternative hair removal method such as laser or IPL, which permanently removes hair and reduces the risk of clogged pores. Above all, consult a dermatologist or professional to determine the best option for your skin type and needs.

Precautions

Here are a few precautions to consider before using natural remedies for strawberry legs:

  • Perform a patch test: Apply a small amount of the new product to your skin and wait 24 hours to ensure there is no reaction.

  • Avoid excessive exfoliation: Once or twice a week is enough to avoid weakening the skin.

  • Choose suitable skincare products: Opt for products free of alcohol and synthetic fragrances to minimize irritation.

  • Avoid excessively hot water: Opt for lukewarm showers to preserve moisture and prevent pores from dilating.

  • Consult a professional if necessary: If strawberry legs persist despite a suitable routine, a dermatologist can recommend specific solutions, including dermatological treatments or alternative hair removal methods such as laser.

Expert advice

After hair removal, apply a cold compress or aloe vera gel to soothe your skin and tighten pores. This simple step helps soothe the skin, minimize the appearance of dark spots, and reduce redness.
