What is hemp?

Hemp, or "Cannabis sativa", is an annual plant belonging to the Cannabaceae family. Native to Central Asia, hemp was one of the first plants domesticated by man. Used for over 10,000 years, hemp has been used to make textiles, rope and paper, as well as food and medicine. Ancient civilisations such as the Chinese and Egyptians were well aware of its many applications. It has been cultivated for thousands of years for its fibres, seeds and medicinal properties. Although often associated with marijuana because of their shared membership of the Cannabis sativa species, industrial hemp contains very low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive substance found in marijuana.

Hemp oil: why are its properties for hair so interesting?

Composition of Hemp oil

Hemp oil has the advantage of having a composition similar to human sebum, making it highly penetrating. It contains a large quantity of essential fatty acids, especially omega-6 (linoleic acid). These cannot be synthesised by our bodies. Yet they play an important role in the protection and beauty of the skin (nails, hair).

Naturally rich in vitamins (A, B, D, E), Hemp oil also helps to make hair stronger. We particularly recommend it for dry, limp, brittle hair. Used regularly, it can help restore softness, shine and suppleness to your hair. What's more, it makes styling easier!

What are its benefits?

  • Hydration and nutrition: Hemp oil is rich in essential fatty acids, particularly omega-3 and omega-6, which help to moisturise and nourish the scalp and hair, leaving it softer and shinier. It contains vitamins A, C and E, as well as minerals such as zinc and iron, which are crucial for healthy hair.

  • Hair strengthening: The amino acids present in Hemp oil strengthen the hair structure, reducing breakage and promoting stronger, more resistant hair.

  • Stimulation of hair growth thanks to gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) : This fatty acid helps to improve blood circulation in the scalp, promoting hair growth.

  • Balancing the scalp: Hemp oil has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe scalp irritations, reducing itching and dandruff. It helps balance sebum production, which is beneficial for both dry and oily scalps.

  • Protection against damage: The antioxidants in Hemp oil protect hair against damage caused by free radicals and environmental aggressors, such as pollution and UV rays.

Cannabis sativa L. vs Cannabis indica: does my oil contain THC?

The Latin name for hemp oil (Cannabis) can be confusing… Rest assured: using ORGANIC hemp oil on your hair poses no risk of addiction.

In France, the varieties of Cannabis sativa authorised for use in cosmetics contain a maximum of 0.2% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). It is this naturally-occurring substance that gives recreational cannabis its psychoactive properties. Aroma-Zone Hemp oil comes from selected seeds and contains no psychotropic substances.

If you're making your own cosmetics, make sure you choose the Cannabis sativa L variety. Don't use subspecies such as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica, which is known for its psychoactive effects. Also avoid Cannabis sativa subsp. sativa, which is reserved for industrial use.

The benefits of Hemp Seed Oil for my hair type

Hemp oil and curly hair

Summer or winter, Hemp oil is for you! Thanks to its lightness, Hemp oil is ideal for caring for curly or wavy hair. For example, it helps nourish the hair fibre without weighing down the natural volume of your curls. So it can help you achieve supple, strong, bouncy curls. Also remember to use it daily to prevent water loss, to which your hair type is naturally exposed.

Hemp oil and textured or afro hair

Textured hair is more prone to dryness than other hair types. As a result, it lacks shine and tangles very easily. A little hempseed oil in a mask or oil bath will give your hair a boost! The essential fatty acids in plant oils are recommended to compensate for the lack of sebum in textured hair. They also help to make detangling easier and limit breakage when styling. A few drops are all you need.

Hemp oil and fine hair

Does your hair feel limp, frizzy and lifeless? Try adding Hemp plant oil to your hair routine. Thanks to its high vitamin and protein content, it has powerful strengthening properties. We recommend using it if you want to invigorate the appearance of fine hair and improve its density. Your hair will look stronger and fuller. You can also apply it to your ends to prevent split ends.

How can I use hemp oil on my hair?

Add a few drops to your haircare products

  1. Add a few drops to your haircare routine: Plant oils are very versatile and can be used pure on your hair. If you're not sure how to go about it, keep it simple: simply add some to your daily haircare routine. A teaspoon of hemp oil in a knob of conditioner, for example, is enough to take advantage of its properties. You can also add 1 or 2 drops to your detangling lotion if you have dry or frizzy hair. Please note: Hemp oil will not mix with your water-based products. Use it only with other oils or emulsions.

  2. Make a Hemp oil bath: A hemp oil bath is a great old-fashioned recipe for nourishing and softening your hair. We recommend you try it every other wash and, over time, adapt the frequency to your hair type. To make your hair bath, massage several drops of ORGANIC Hemp oil into your roots, lengths and ends. Leave in under a warm towel for at least 30 minutes or, ideally, overnight. Afterwards, wash your hair with a shampoo and conditioner.

  3. Leave a hemp oil mask on: Do you prefer masks to oil baths? If so, choose a hair mask base that you can personalise with the active ingredients of your choice. Our suggestion: add 10 ml of Hemp oil to a 200 ml jar of our neutral hair mask base. Spread the treatment over your lengths, then comb through to distribute the product evenly. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing with clean water. You'll have your own personalised mask in no time!

When should I apply hemp oil to my hair?

You want to stimulate your hair growth: can Hemp oil help my hair grow? The answer is yes! This plant oil contains vitamins E and B. These two substances are both essential for maintaining healthy hair growth. With regular application, you can boost hair growth. If this is what you want, apply it to the roots, for example as an oil bath or pre-shampoo massage.

You want to combat hair loss and baldness: Thanks to its strengthening properties, ORGANIC Hemp oil is a precious natural ally for preventing hair loss. You can use it at any age, whatever your gender. Don't hesitate to combine active ingredients. The combination of hempseed oil and castor oil, in particular, is recommended in cases of hair loss and alopecia. Essential oils (*) are also welcome for scalp care.

You want your hair to be softer and shinier: Hemp oil is undoubtedly one of the best plant oils for improving the shine of your hair. You can use it on its own as a daily serum, applying 3 to 4 drops to your dry lengths. If you wish, you can also use it in synergy with other active ingredients renowned for giving hair shine. In all cases, be sure to follow the precautions for use indicated in our nature booklet.
