Skin Tolerance

A Note from Adeline Nalin, Head Pharmacist and Toxicologist at Aroma-Zone

“The Organic Bourbon Geranium Essential Oil is renowned for its toning and regenerating properties and is well-tolerated by the skin when used at a maximum concentration of 2% in cosmetic preparations, such as massage oils. Like all essential oils, it naturally contains allergenic compounds (limonene, citral, linalool, geraniol, citronellol). Due to possible individual sensitivities, caution is advised when using it: it is recommended to perform a preliminary skin test of the final preparation containing the essential oils on the inner elbow 48 hours before any application. Its use is not recommended for very sensitive skin or skin prone to atopic conditions. It is also not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, children under 6 years of age, or people with epilepsy.”

A Plant Extract Safe for Your Health

A Note from Our Aroma-Zone Toxicologist

"A rigorous safety protocol is applied to all our essential oils, taking into account the specific chromatograms for each batch.

Although the risk of skin sensitization cannot be completely ruled out, it is managed through the application of a methodology recognized in the fragrance industry, based on a Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA). This approach allows us to define maximum usage concentrations aimed at achieving a negligible level of risk.

Finally, precautions for use are listed on all our essential oils: they advise against their use by the most sensitive populations and also specify appropriate storage conditions to prevent oxidation.”

A Note from the Phytotherapist

“Rose geranium essential oil is the premier essential oil for skincare. Its scent is more popular than that of Tea tree, which Geranium rivals in effectiveness against pimples! With astringent and anti-collagenase properties, this essential oil helps reduce the signs of aging and remains very affordable. Finally, its hemostatic action will stop bleeding from a cut, whether during shaving or while cooking. In short, an essential for self-care.”

FAQ

Does Rose Geranium Essential Oil have antioxidant or anti-aging properties?

Rose Geranium essential oil contains a high proportion of monoterpenols, including citronellol, a molecule known for its antioxidant properties. In cosmetics, this action helps protect the skin from oxidative stress and preserve the complexion’s radiance.

It is also valued for its astringent properties, which help tighten pores and refine skin texture. These properties make it a valuable ingredient in skincare products designed for mature skin or skin in need of radiance, as a complement to a tailored skincare routine.

At what concentrations is rose geranium essential oil used in cosmetics?

In cosmetics, Rose Geranium essential oil should always be diluted in a vegetable oil or a suitable neutral carrier. It can be incorporated at a concentration of up to 2% in a skin care formulation, such as a cream, treatment oil, gel, or lotion.

Example: To improve the appearance of a scar, add 3 to 5 drops of rose geranium essential oil to 10 ml of Rosehip Vegetable Oil, then apply the mixture to the affected area.

To make a face cream for acne-prone skin, 15 drops can be diluted in 50 ml of Hydrating Neutral Cream.

Is Rose Geranium Essential Oil photosensitizing?

No, Rose Geranium essential oil is not known to be photosensitizing. However, it is still recommended to avoid direct sun exposure immediately after applying a formula containing essential oils and to use appropriate sunscreen if exposed to the sun.

How can you recognize a cosmetic-grade Rose Geranium essential oil?

A cosmetic-grade Rose Geranium essential oil meets specific criteria for traceability and purity.

The designation “Botanically and Biochemically Defined Essential Oil” (HEBBD) guarantees rigorous identification of the botanical species (Pelargonium graveolens), the part of the plant used, and the characteristic biochemical profile.

It must be :

100% pure, meaning free of other similar essential oils, 100% natural, undenatured with synthetic molecules, 100% whole, undiluted, undeterpenated, and unrectified.

These criteria ensure compliance with the natural composition resulting from distillation and serve as an essential quality benchmark for cosmetic use.
