Native to southern Africa, pelargonium - or florists' geranium - belongs to the Geraniaceae family. TheGreek origin of the plant's botanical name is " geranos ", meaning crane, because the fruit of the plant resembles the bird's beak. It was imported to Europe at the end of the 16th century. Its pretty, fragrant pink, white or red flowers were a big hit, and it quickly became very fashionable at court and in the gardens of French châteaux.

Gardeners have tried their hand at numerous hybridisations over the centuries, and there are now over 600 species of geranium! They are grown all over the world, particularly in China, the Maghreb countries, Madagascar and Reunion Island, from which the species takes its name " Bourbon " (from theisland's ancient name). Although Bourbon Geranium has the same properties as its Egyptian counterpart, the olfactory quality of Bourbon Geranium is much more delicate, flowery and sweet than Geranium from Egypt. In fact, it is the Bourbon that is traditionally used in perfumery. Contrary to popular belief, geraniumessential oil is extracted from its leaves and stems, not its flowers. Geranium has a strong presence in perfumery, with its sweet, rose-like scent, and is used in particular in fragrances for... men.
