What is an oil mask?

An oil mask is a real wellness treatment for your hair! This technique involves generously applying one or more plant-derived oils to your entire head of hair, from the roots to the ends. The idea is to deeply nourish, moisturise and repair your hair thanks to the oils' natural properties. It's a traditional method that has been used for years and is very popular in natural haircare routines, allowing you to take advantage of nature's treasures to improve your hair simply and easily.

What is an oil mask used for?

This hair care method has many benefits for the hair. By applying one or more oils high in ceramides and fatty acids, you can nourish and moisturise your hair. The oil penetrates deep into the hair and smoothes the scales, strengthening them. In this way, it protects your hair from external damage such as pollution, chemical products and the frequent use of heated appliances.

What are the benefits?

Oil masks are a real blessing for your hair, offering a multitude of benefits that help make it healthier and look amazing. Here's a list of the benefits:

  • Intense hydration: plant-derived oils deeply nourish the hair, helping it to retain its natural moisture and prevent dryness.

  • Hair nutrition: the essential fatty acids and vitamins found in plant-based oils provide hair with the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and full of vitality.

  • Hair strengthening: oil masks strengthen hair structure, making it more resistant to breakage and damage.

  • Prevention of split ends: by sealing in moisture and protecting hair from environmental damage, oil masks help prevent split ends.

  • Improved texture: hair becomes softer, smoother and more manageable after a regular oil mask.

  • Increased shine and lustre: by smoothing the hair cuticle, oil masks increase the hair's ability to reflect light, giving it a shinier, more lustrous appearance.

  • Scalp relief: plant-derived oils help the scalp feel less irritated and itchy, creating an environment conducive to hair growth.

  • Frizz reduction: by keeping hair hydrated and protecting it from humidity, oil masks help to reduce frizz and smooth hair texture.

  • Hair growth stimulation: by improving scalp health and strengthening hair follicles, oil masks promote healthy hair growth.

  • Relaxation and well-being: in addition to all these hair benefits, taking the time to apply an oil mask can be a relaxing and soothing experience and even a well-deserved pampering session.

What type of hair is an oil mask for?

Oil masks are beneficial for all hair types, whether they're damaged, dry, curly, frizzy or simply need a boost. But when it comes to choosing the right oil for your hair oil mask, it's essential to factor in your hair type and its specific needs.

For dry, damaged hair

If you have dry, damaged hair, opt for plant-derived oils that are high in moisturising, nourishing and protective agents. Ideal options include coconut oil, argan oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil and wheatgerm oil. These oils penetrate deep into the hair fibre, providing intense moisturisation and helping to make your hair healthy again.

For greasy hair

If your hair tends to be oily, concentrate on the hair itself as well as the ends when applying oil, avoiding the scalp. Opt for sebo-regulating plant-derived oils, which are lighter and help to regulate sebum production without weighing your hair down.

For coloured, bleached or highlighted hair

Coloured, bleached or highlighted hair needs to be deeply moisturised, as chemical treatments can weaken it. It is essential to strengthen the hair structure. Some oils can alter the colour of your hair, so it's best to choose oils that will help preserve your colour while restoring your hair's vitality.

How do I make a good hair oil mask?

  1. Start by lightly dampening your hair: this step helps the oil penetrate the hair fibre. You can use a spray bottle to moisten your hair evenly.

  2. Take a small amount of the oil of your choice and warm it by rubbing it between your hands: then apply it all over your hair, paying particular attention to the ends, which tend to be drier. Make sure you distribute the oil evenly so that it covers every strand.

  3. With the rest of the oil on your hands, gently massage your scalp: avoid adding more oil at this stage. Massaging stimulates blood circulation in the scalp and helps your scalp absorb the oil better as well as giving you a pleasant feeling of relaxation.

  4. Leave the oil in for at least 30 minutes, and for a more intensive treatment, you can leave the oil on your hair overnight.

  5. Afterwards, wash your hair with a gentle, natural shampoo and conditioner.

How long should I leave an oil mask on?

To reap the full benefits of an oil mask, we recommend leaving it on for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour. This allows the oil to penetrate deep into the hair fibre, nourishing and repairing the hair from the inside out. For more intense effects, you can also leave the oil mask on overnight by wrapping your hair in a towel or using a shower cap. This method ensures maximum absorption of nutrients.

What routine should you adopt for healthy hair?

This routine helps to nourish, moisturise and strengthen hair, while leaving it soft and shiny.

1. Oil mask: Once a week, take a generous amount of your plant-derived oil and warm it lightly in your hands before applying the oil to the whole of your hair as well as the ends. Leave in for at least 30 minutes or even several hours. For more intense effects, you can wrap your hair in a warm towel. Rinse thoroughly with warm water before shampooing.

2. Shampoo: on wet hair, apply a little of our Strength and Shine shampoo bar to the scalp. Gently massage the scalp with your fingers to create a lather and distribute the product. Rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove the shampoo.

3. Conditioner: apply our Nourishing and Detangling conditioner bar to the whole of your hair, including the ends, but avoiding the roots. Leave on for 3 to 5 minutes to allow the conditioner to work its magic and make detangling easier. Rinse thoroughly with cold water to close the hair scales and make hair shiny.

Contraindications

Applying oil to an oily scalp is likely to stimulate even more sebum production. It is therefore preferable to apply the oil to your hair only, avoiding the roots. If you have fine hair, an oil mask can weigh down the hair fibre, leaving hair flat and lacking volume. Use oil masks sparingly.

Also, oil masks can sometimes be difficult to rinse out. Don't apply too much product as you may end up leaving a greasy film on your hair. It's also important to rinse well and shampoo to remove any excess oil.

Expert advice

It's important not to use too much oil. You don't want your hair to be dripping, as this could weigh it down and make it greasy instead of moisturising. The amount you need will vary depending on the length of your hair, but generally about two tablespoons of oil should be enough. This will ensure even coverage and give you all the benefits without applying excessive amounts. If you have longer or thicker hair, you can adjust the amount accordingly, but be careful not to overdo it to avoid excess oil.
