Ingredients & Nutrition – Emilie Jolibois

A chemical engineer by training, Emilie has become an expert in plant-based active ingredients and cosmetics. Having contributed to the growth and development of Aroma-Zone’s R&D department, she now heads the Ingredients & Nutrition division, overseeing the development of nutritional products and the selection and evaluation of new plant-based ingredients and cosmetic actives.

Interview

Can you tell us about your role at Aroma-Zone?

I’m head of the Ingredients & Nutrition division within Aroma-Zone’s Innovation & Products department. Together with the ‘Ingredients & Nutrition’ team, I oversee the launch of new raw materials for homemade cosmetics, aromatherapy and wellbeing, as well as the development of our ranges of food supplements and nutritional ingredients. We analyse our customers’ requests and look for new extracts and natural ingredients that can meet their expectations. We’re always on the lookout for research and publications in the field of natural nutrition and wellbeing so that our innovations are backed by science. We review new products offered by our suppliers and carry out our own literature reviews to determine a product’s potential. We then assess all ingredients according to several criteria: origin, composition, method of extraction, activity and properties… My favourite part: whether it’s touching, smelling or tasting, I love testing the ingredients!

What are your days like?

Intense and exciting! We work on multiple projects at once; there are always samples to evaluate, research or analyses to carry out, suppliers to consult, information to pass on… We work as a team, particularly with the graphic design department, the cosmetic formulation laboratory and the procurement team… As we work with natural raw materials, whose appearance, scent, origin and availability can vary depending on the seasons and harvests, we have to deal with a lot of changes! My team also handles the organic certification of ingredients.

What does working on the Aroma-Zone project mean to you?

One of the aspects I enjoy most is sharing information and helping people find what suits them best for natural self-care, in line with their values and aspirations. Part of my job also involves writing the technical data sheets for our dietary supplements and DIY cosmetic ingredients. I enjoy helping our customers better understand the formulations and make informed choices about their products. I also love being able to combine my work with my passion for the properties of plants, natural nutrition and making ‘homemade’ cosmetics – it’s a real privilege!

Your top 3 products

On the body, it’s a naturally scented, nourishing treatment after a shower. On the hair, it’s an exceptional treatment when I have time for an oil treatment. For children, it’s a great anti-head lice treatment.

  2. Ylang-Ylang essential oil: its heady scent is a real delight. It also helps soothe my tendency to experience palpitations.

  3. The superfood Organic Brazilian Ginseng Powder: an adaptogenic plant native to the Amazon, ideal during periods of stress and fatigue!

Laetitia Jammes

Laetitia holds a degree in food science and engineering, specialising in nutrition and health. After gaining professional experience in quality assurance and regulatory affairs, she has been thriving as part of Aroma-Zone’s R&D team for the past two years.

Interview

Can you tell us about your role at Aroma-Zone?

I’m a project manager for the development of food supplements: I’m therefore responsible for coordinating all the stages leading up to the launch of new food supplements, from formulating the product, through sourcing the best ingredients, liaising with our industrial partners, and coordinating the various stages, right through to drafting the content for our labelling. This involves liaising with numerous internal departments, including procurement, the regulatory department, quality control, logistics, graphic design and communications.

What are your typical days like?

Every day is different! My tasks are very varied and depend on the stage the project is at. In the early stages of a project, I carry out scientific research and liaise with ingredient suppliers and industrial partners to find innovative ideas that meet a specific need. Then, I sometimes carry out laboratory tests, draft the labelling and the content for the product page on the website, and coordinate the various stages internally to ensure the product is launched on time.

What does Aroma-Zone mean to you? For me, Aroma-Zone is proof that you can combine quality, effectiveness and affordability. I love working in such a stimulating environment, especially one that reflects my own values.

  3. Vegan Omega-3 – 60 capsules – Dietary supplement: A must-have for me amongst all dietary supplements. I take courses of these from time to time throughout the year.

Margaux Coquenlorge, Interview

What is your educational background?

I obtained a DUT in medical biology, a third-year bachelor’s degree in environmental chemistry, and then a Master’s degree in phytochemistry. This unconventional career path and my passion for the plant world have enabled me to work in the field of plant eco-extraction, creating new ingredients for the cosmetics, food and nutraceuticals markets. I joined Aroma-Zone in 2022 and continue to create, source and innovate for the ingredients and nutrition department, focusing entirely on plant-based ingredients.

Can you describe your role at Aroma-Zone?

I’m a plant-based ingredients project manager. Part of my role involves managing the launches of new products in our DIY ranges, in collaboration with all AZ departments. My second main responsibility is to provide technical expertise throughout the lifecycle of existing products in our ranges.

What are your days like?

No two days are the same. My days are all punctuated by interactions with our raw materials, our in-house staff and our suppliers. My days involve moving projects forward step by step, from selecting the raw materials and setting the product’s retail price, to passing on information to the relevant departments, drafting product descriptions for the website and providing scientific justification for the properties of the raw materials.

What does Aroma-Zone mean to you?

Accessibility, natural ingredients, transparency, simplicity and high standards.

Juliette Normand, Interview

What is your educational background?

I have an engineering degree in formulation, and I then went on to complete a one-year master’s degree to specialise in the field of flavours, fragrances and cosmetics.

Can you describe your role at Aroma-Zone?

I’m a project manager within the Ingredients and Nutrition team, where I work on a variety of projects. A significant part of my role involves managing the launch of new ingredients and raw materials, such as vegetable oils, DIY cosmetic actives and plant powders. I oversee the project from start to finish: from sourcing raw materials and calculating prices, to conducting literature reviews, drafting packaging copy and uploading technical data sheets online. Alongside this, I also contribute to other tasks such as dual sourcing, certifying our products and promoting our ingredients.

What are your days like?

My days are all different, depending on priorities and the progress of my projects. I might be in touch with suppliers, writing technical data sheets for our website, carrying out literature reviews or assessing raw materials.

What does Aroma-Zone mean to you?

Aroma-Zone has become a key player in the cosmetics market, whilst remaining accessible, close to its customers and offering natural products. I find it very stimulating to contribute to the development of a rapidly growing company.

Adeline Nalin

Toxicology – Adeline Nalin

Adeline, who holds a PhD in Pharmacy, has been working for over 20 years in the assessment of toxicological risks (ingredients, finished products) in both the industrial sector and the service sector. She discovered toxicology during a university exchange programme in Quebec, and has always been fortunate enough to work in this dynamic and fascinating sector.

Interview

What is your educational background?

I studied pharmacy, first at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Lyon and at the University of Montreal in Quebec, then I went on to do a Master’s in human toxicology at the Faculty of Paris V. I entered the industry very quickly, moving from vaccinology to cosmetics, whilst gaining experience across various roles in toxicology and risk assessment.

Can you tell us about your role at Aroma-Zone?

I joined Aroma-Zone in 2022, with the goal of developing and in-sourcing a comprehensive service that ensures, on the one hand, a solid regulatory foundation for our product catalogue, including all tolerance and efficacy tests, and, on the other hand, a guarantee of maximum safety for the health of our consumers and our environment! We therefore cover all product developments, across all sectors, from ingredient selection and safety assessment to product communication (labelling, technical data sheets, newsletters, etc.). Our work is technical and complex, and often little understood. That is why it is important for us to share our expertise by taking part in scientific conferences. We are also members of the Essential Oils Consortium and the French Society of Toxicology, amongst others.

What are your days like?

No two days at Aroma-Zone are ever the same! This is because every product development is unique in terms of its composition, packaging, instructions for use, target audience, claims, regulatory scope and the countries in which it is marketed! We carry out comprehensive safety programmes for each formula (through tolerance tests, for example on reconstructed human skin, various in vitro tests, or clinical trials), and compile all the findings into a “safety report” which demonstrates that a given product poses no risk. We also carry out post-market surveillance of our products, which involves monitoring for adverse effects throughout the products’ time on the market.

What does Aroma-Zone mean to you?

Above all, Aroma-Zone is an accessible, committed and ambitious company. It’s an empathetic explorer that listens to its community, adapts to changing regulations and market challenges, and makes high-quality natural skincare accessible to every budget. Its ambition is to make natural skincare available to all, without compromising on quality. And like any great adventurer, it moves forward with courage and determination, always striving to reach new heights.

  2. Dietary supplement Vegan Omega-3 capsules.

  3. Peaceful Night Pillow Mist: Orange Blossom & Lemon Balm.

Agathe Deniau

Agathe Deniau

Agathe, who holds a PhD in Pharmacy, has now been working in the cosmetics and dietary supplements sector for over 10 years.

Interview

What is your educational background?

I have a PhD in Pharmacy; I studied at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Montpellier and, in my final year, I went to the Faculty of Pharmacy in Châtenay-Malabry to do a master’s degree specialising in cosmetology. I initially gained professional experience in regulatory affairs before specialising in the field of toxicology, specifically risk assessment. I have now been working in the cosmetics and food supplements sector for over 10 years.

Can you tell us about your role at Aroma-Zone?

My role is to manage risks and ensure consumer protection. I am therefore responsible for assessing the safety of products before they are placed on the market. In practical terms, as a product—formulated by our in-house experts—progresses through the various stages of development, I analyse and validate the various data (such as the type of ingredient used and in what quantity, the results of tolerance and usage tests, instructions for use and precautions, etc.) to ensure it meets the requirements for safe use or consumption. The process of assessing safety in use does not stop at finished products; it also covers ingredients offered for customisation, suggested recipes, essential oils, etc. Our role does not end once the product is on the market; in fact, we also monitor products throughout their entire lifecycle, as regulations are constantly changing and amendments may be made at any time.

What are your days like?

No two days are ever the same! Aroma-Zone offers a wide variety of products, so each development project has its own specific characteristics, which means the work is very varied every day. We work on different types of products, such as cosmetics and food supplements; the approaches to assessing compliance and safety differ depending on whether the product is for topical or oral use, and whether it is intended for adults or children, whilst also taking into account the specific requirements of each country where we already sell them or plan to sell them! Every product has its own identity, formula, method of use, packaging and claims… so there are so many unique aspects that make every new case file one of a kind!

What does Aroma-Zone mean to you?

A company that’s close to its customers. Aroma-Zone has a real community of enthusiasts behind it. When I hear people talking about Aroma-Zone products, it’s synonymous with simplicity – just the essentials.

Your top 3 products

  1. Satinée Or dry oil.

  2. The Neutral Youth Cream (very useful as it offers a wide range of customisation options).

  3. The dietary supplement Hyaluronic Acid Capsules.

Manon Fournier, Interview

What is your educational background?

I have a degree in industrial biology, and I went on to do a Master’s in human toxicology at Paris-Sorbonne University. After gaining experience in the pharmaceutical sector, I chose to specialise in the cosmetics industry, where I have worked in both manufacturing and the service sector.

Can you tell us about your role at Aroma-Zone?

I’m responsible for ensuring the safety of the ingredients used in our products. To do this, I carry out in-depth research using reliable sources (scientific articles, databases, specialist organisations). I collate this information to create what is known as the ingredient’s ‘toxicological profile’. This profile enables me to verify that the ingredient is used at a safe dose for the consumer.

When we’re looking for new ingredients, I work closely with suppliers to select raw materials that are safe and pose no risk to health. I’m also responsible for the safety of the packaging. I check that it complies with current regulations and, where necessary, I arrange for tests to be carried out to ensure it’s compatible with our formulations.

What are your days like?

In an environment where regulations are constantly changing, keeping abreast of regulatory and toxicological developments is at the heart of my role. This means I have to stay informed about new laws, scientific recommendations and expert opinions to guarantee product compliance and safety. This involves ongoing training, which is essential for maintaining a high level of expertise and anticipating future changes.

My job is never routine: every day brings its own set of challenges and a variety of projects. I might find myself working on the assessment of a new ingredient, analysing toxicological data, liaising with suppliers, or checking that packaging complies with regulations. This variety makes my work particularly stimulating and allows me to actively contribute to consumer safety whilst supporting innovation in the cosmetics industry.

What does Aroma-Zone mean to you?

To me, Aroma-Zone represents much more than just a brand: it’s a story of trust and commitment. As a customer for over ten years, I’ve been lucky enough to follow its development and I’m proud to be contributing to its incredible growth today. For me, Aroma-Zone is synonymous with transparency, loyalty – both from customers and from the brand towards them – and accessibility for all. It’s also a company that’s deeply aware of health and environmental issues, and which places these values at the heart of its development.

  2. Organic Eucalyptus Black Soap, for skincare that feels just like a hammam experience.

I’m the Head of Cosmetic Formulation at Aroma-Zone. I’m in charge of the entire formulation department, overseeing the development of our ready-to-use cosmetic ranges, customisable cosmetics, biocidal products, cleaning products and home fragrance products. We’re a team of 13 people comprising development project managers, development project officers, industrialisation project managers and formulation technicians.

What is a typical day like for you?

I don’t have a typical day, and that’s what makes my job so exciting and stimulating. Every day we develop new products using natural ingredients, and each product presents a new challenge to ensure we’re always innovating and delivering effective, sensorial and high-quality products.

Camille Skurzak, Interview

What’s your educational background?

I have a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology and a master’s degree in formulation and industrial chemistry.

Can you tell us about your role at Aroma-Zone?

I’m a project manager specialising in cosmetic formulation. I’m also responsible for coordinating all departments (purchasing, subcontracting, quality, logistics and regulatory affairs) to ensure the project’s success, and I draft the scientific content for the product data sheets.

What are your days like?

There’s no such thing as a typical day in this department. I get to work on several projects at once, which keeps things interesting. One day, I might be in the lab developing formulations, testing new materials or sourcing raw ingredients. The next, I could be monitoring how products perform over time, working with external partners such as suppliers and subcontractors, or bringing different teams together to keep a project moving forward.

What does Aroma-Zone mean to you?

It’s a dynamic company that listens to its community and thrives on a challenge.

Can you describe your role at Aroma-Zone?

I’m a project manager specialising in cosmetic formulation. I work on the development of all types of products: skincare, haircare, personal care, make-up, suncare, and so on. It’s a very wide-ranging role; I’m involved throughout the entire project: sourcing raw materials, creating laboratory formulations, monitoring stability, scaling up for industrial production and project management. I liaise with all departments to coordinate the product launch (regulatory, procurement, subcontracting, marketing, product testing, etc.).

What are your days like?

I work on several projects at different stages of development. So, in the course of a single day, I might find myself sourcing new raw materials, meeting with suppliers, developing formulations, checking product stability over time, coordinating the project with all stakeholders, visiting a subcontractor to scale up the formulations, or spending entire days on a very specific task.

Can you tell us about your role at Aroma-Zone?

I’m a project manager specialising in homemade cosmetic formulations within the Research & Development department. I work on developing the best recipes for homemade cosmetics, whether for our website, our cosmetic gift sets or our recipe books. I test raw materials and equipment to help produce our product data sheets (preparation, use, etc.). I’m also involved in developing the range of ready-to-use skincare products.

What are your typical working days like?

I formulate homemade cosmetics recipes and work on refining them until they achieve optimal effectiveness and sensory qualities. I carry out control and stability tests on each recipe to check for any signs of instability (changes in appearance, colour, smell, etc.). If this is the case, I reformulate the recipes to improve them. I have each recipe tested by an in-house panel to assess its safety, effectiveness and sensory qualities. Once the recipes have been approved, I share them on the website, taking care to provide simple and clear instructions.

What does Aroma-Zone mean to you?

I fully embrace the concept of ‘homemade cosmetics’ promoted by this brand; in fact, it was Aroma-Zone that introduced me to it, and I couldn’t go back now.
