To be considered an adaptogen, a natural substance (plant, root, or mushroom) must meet three criteria:
Increase the body’s ability to resist stressors, whether physical, chemical, or biological
Restore homeostasis by acting in a regulatory manner: neither stimulating nor sedative, but rebalancing
Be non-toxic at normal doses and be able to be administered over time without significant side effects
Among adaptogenic plants is ginseng, ashwagandha, rhodiola, maca, ginger, or even astragalus. All these plants boost resistance to stress (physical, mental, or emotional) and help improve vitality.
Adaptogenic mushrooms perform these functions by acting on the adrenal glands, which are responsible for producing cortisol (the stress hormone), and by helping to regulate it. Through their biphasic action, they can both stimulate and soothe the body depending on its needs. Finally, they contain powerful bioactive compounds capable of influencing the nervous, immune, and endocrine systems.
