Ginseng comes in several forms, each with its own characteristics:
American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius): This ginseng, grown primarily in North America, is known for its milder, less stimulating effects compared to Asian ginseng. It is often used for its calming properties and to improve general well-being.
Asian Ginseng (Panax ginseng): This ginseng is native to Asia and is often considered more potent than American ginseng. It is used for its invigorating and adaptogenic effects, supporting energy and stress resistance.
Indian Ginseng (Ashwagandha, Withania somnifera): Also known as Ashwagandha, Indian ginseng is a highly prized adaptogen in Ayurvedic medicine. It is known for its relaxing and balancing properties, helping to reduce stress and promote vitality. Unlike other forms of ginseng, it is often used to calm the mind and improve sleep quality.
There are two types of ginseng preparations that differ in colour:
White Ginseng: This type of ginseng is obtained by drying the fresh roots of Panax ginseng. It is generally used in traditional preparations and has tonifying properties.
Red Ginseng: Unlike white ginseng, red ginseng is steamed before drying, which gives it a distinctive red colour. This preparation method increases its concentration of active compounds, which can enhance its energising and adaptogenic effects.
