Let’s get one thing straight from the outset: the best anti-wrinkle products for some people aren’t necessarily the best for others. We all have our own personal preferences: texture, scent, skin tolerance, value for money. However, the anti-ageing and anti-wrinkle products in this selection have one major advantage: they’ve received (almost) unanimous praise from those who’ve tested and reviewed them. Discover the most popular Aroma-Zone formulas for smoothing out expression lines and deep wrinkles.

In brief

  • The concept of ‘the best anti-wrinkle treatments’ remains variable and relatively subjective.

  • Finding the best product involves distinguishing between dynamic and static wrinkles.

  • An organic certification or a high price tag are not always a guarantee of effectiveness.

Which anti-wrinkle products should you choose depending on your age and the type of wrinkles?

Younger skin requires products that target expression lines, whilst mature skin needs products that target static wrinkles.

The best anti-wrinkle treatments, by definition, target established wrinkles. Unlike anti-ageing products, they are therefore not based solely on a preventative approach. In terms of age, they therefore become truly relevant from the moment you notice the presence of wrinkles on your face (often from the age of 25, or even earlier depending on your genetic and skin profile).

  • Expression lines : these are generally the first to appear, around the age of 20 or even earlier. The repetitive contractions of our facial muscles, as we make various facial expressions, eventually leave a creased appearance on the skin – initially temporary, then permanent. The best topical treatments for targeting this type of wrinkle are those containing neuromodulatory active ingredients, which are capable, for example, of influencing certain neurotransmission processes that cause muscle contraction (1). Some examples include: products formulated with neuropeptides that have a ‘Botox-like’ effect or muscle-relaxing plant extracts, such as spilanthol.

  • Static wrinkles: these are wrinkles visible at rest, which begin to appear from around the age of 30. They start out as fine static wrinkles, which deepen as your skin’s reserves of collagen and elastin diminish. They result from profound changes that transform your dermis as you age. In this case, the most effective anti-wrinkle treatments are those that stimulate collagen synthesis whilst limiting its breakdown. Some examples include products enriched with retinoids (2) or plant extracts with ‘retinol-like’ effects, antioxidants such as vitamin C, or fruit acids (AHAs).

Good to know: fine lines caused by dehydration are not directly linked to ageing. If this applies to you, opt for moisturisers rather than anti-wrinkle products.

What is the best organic anti-wrinkle cream, according to dermatologists?

The best anti-wrinkle cream is one that provides clinical proof of its effectiveness whilst offering optimal skin tolerance.

For dermatologists, the best anti-wrinkle treatments are generally those that contain active ingredients with scientifically proven efficacy, concentrated at their optimal effective dosage. Organic certification may be seen as an advantage by some professionals, but it is not the primary criterion when choosing a cream or serum.

When it comes to anti-wrinkle products, the active ingredients backed by the most compelling scientific evidence are often incompatible with the specifications for organic cosmetics. This is the case with retinol: one of the most extensively studied and effective anti-wrinkle ingredients, but one that is synthetic in origin.

However, it is still possible to combine organic certification with effectiveness. Bakuchiol, for example, has the advantage of being plant-based and compatible with organic certification standards. A 2018 study found it to be just as effective as retinol at reducing the appearance of wrinkles and hyperpigmentation (dark spots) at the same concentration (0.5 per cent) (3).

Dermatologists also emphasise the skin tolerance of anti-wrinkle creams. So remember to choose your skincare product according to your skin type and its specific needs. If you have sensitive, mature skin, for example, look out for labels such as ‘hypoallergenic’ (4).

What criteria determine the highest ratings for an anti-wrinkle product?

In practice, the concept of the ‘best anti-ageing skincare products’ varies depending on individual expectations.

Our choices sometimes differ radically from the recommendations of dermatologists and scientists. And indeed, the highest-rated anti-wrinkle products are not always those with the strongest clinical evidence, the most sophisticated formulations or the most stable active ingredients. Here are the criteria that feature most frequently in our customer reviews.

Key principles

Key points to bear in mind

Perceived effectiveness

This moves away from instrumental clinical evidence to focus on visual benefits and perception: smoother skin, less visible wrinkles, and a feeling of firmness.

Presence of recognised active ingredients

Vitamin C, AHAs, retinoids, bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid, peptides, niacinamide, collagen.

Product ethics

No controversial ingredients, organic certification, vegan, natural ingredients, locally manufactured or sourced through short supply chains, refillable or recyclable packaging.

Sensory experience of the product

The more pleasant the product is to use (scent, texture, finish, comfort), the more it encourages regular application, which is essential for seeing results in the appearance of wrinkles.

Formula tolerance

Fragrance-free, free from potentially irritating active ingredients, containing additional soothing agents, and with a concentration suitable for daily use.

Value for money

The best anti-wrinkle skincare products are not necessarily the most expensive. Price cannot be taken as a reliable indicator of a cream’s or serum’s effectiveness (4).

The dermatologist’s opinion

"Expression lines (forehead, glabella, crow’s feet) are caused by the action of the facial muscles. It is therefore unrealistic to think that cosmetics can prevent them 100 per cent.

However, outside these areas, wrinkles are caused by photoageing. Smoking is an aggravating factor. The decision to prevent these signs depends on individual choices and societal pressures.

Fair-skinned people who are frequently exposed to the sun tend to show signs of photoageing, including wrinkles, more frequently and at an earlier age.

Prevention involves a combination of measures: ‘sensible’ sun protection (avoidance, clothing, sunscreens), a daily dietary intake of antioxidants, good sleep hygiene, and giving up smoking where applicable.

Cosmetics with antioxidant properties, such as vitamin C or carotenoids, may help to slow down photoageing. Moisturising cosmetics, on the other hand, temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles by smoothing out micro-relief."

Dr Reyhan Amode, dermatologist and member of the Aroma-Zone College of Dermatologists

Precautions

It is common for the skin to become more sensitive as we age, as it becomes thinner and its protective barrier weakens. Even the best anti-wrinkle products can trigger an adverse reaction. Therefore, take the time to test any new formula you introduce into your daily routine before making it a permanent part of your skincare regime.
