What is foot numbness?

Foot numbness, also known as paresthesia, refers to a decrease or loss of sensation in this area of the body, which can lead to significant discomfort or even an inability to walk.

The human body’s mobility is ensured by the bones, tendons, ligaments, and muscles of the foot. But this complex structure is connected to the entire lower limbs and the skeleton. The result? The cause of foot numbness often lies outside the feet. And its severity varies greatly from one case to another.

Why do we get a numb foot?

Nerve disorders: Nerves can be compressed or damaged by conditions such as peripheral neuropathy or sciatica, leading to numbness in the feet.

Circulatory disorders: Poor blood circulation due to conditions such as atherosclerosis or varicose veins can reduce blood flow to the feet, causing numbness.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS): RLS causes an irresistible urge to move the legs, often accompanied by unpleasant sensations and numbness.

Deficiencies: A deficiency in vitamins and minerals, particularly in vitamin B12 and/or calcium, can affect the nerves and cause numbness in the extremities.

Inflammatory diseases: Diseases such as arthritis or multiple sclerosis (MS) can cause inflammation affecting the nerves and leading to numbness, particularly in the feet.

Numb feet: what are the symptoms?

The loss of sensation characteristic of foot numbness is often accompanied by other symptoms:

  • Tingling or pins-and-needles sensation: Tingling or pins-and-needles sensations in the foot may be caused by nerve damage or reduced blood flow in the area.

  • A burning sensation: Similarly, whether the issue is neurological or circulatory, it is not uncommon for numbness to be accompanied by a burning sensation, usually on the sole of the foot or in the toes.

  • Leg pain: If numbness in the feet is caused by a severe circulatory disorder such as phlebitis, it is not uncommon for it to be accompanied by throbbing pain in the legs.

  • Numbness in the ankle: numbness in the foot can spread to the ankle and lower leg. If you notice that the symptoms are spreading, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.

  • Generalised fatigue: This is very often the case if the feet are numb due to deficiencies or related conditions.

The main consequences of foot numbness are loss of balance and reduced sensitivity, which can lead to injuries. That is why it is important to take these symptoms seriously and seek appropriate medical care.

How to treat numb feet naturally?

Apply cold

Cold causes vasoconstriction, which helps stimulate circulation and relieve numb feet. To apply cold to the numb area, you can run cold water over it or soak your feet in cold water for 10 to 15 minutes.

Another solution is to spray cold witch hazel hydrosol on your feet. This product is a venous tonic that promotes circulation and relieves heavy legs and numb feet.

Witch Hazel Hydrosol

Witch hazel floral water is recommended in formulations for sensitive skin prone to redness. Astringent, toning, and purifying, it is an ideal ingredient for creating skincare products for combination and oily skin or for making deodorants.

What routine should you adopt to stop having numb feet?

  1. Drink enough water: Dehydration can cause or worsen numbness. Aim for 1.5 litres of good-quality water per day (filtered tap water or spring water).

  2. Eat a varied diet: To avoid nutritional deficiencies, eat enough of a variety of foods.

  3. Take contrast showers: Contrast showers involve alternating between hot and cold water during a single shower, focusing on the legs and arms. When done regularly, they help stimulate blood circulation by alternating between vasoconstriction and vasodilation.

  4. Take care of your feet: Every evening, take a moment to massage and stretch your feet, focusing on the soles and toes. This helps maintain circulation and muscle flexibility in the area.

  5. Wear compression stockings: especially useful if your job requires you to stand for long periods or walk around a lot, or when travelling by plane.

Precautions

  • Numb feet are a symptom with many possible causes. If they indicate a mild and temporary circulatory issue, natural techniques can help relieve the discomfort. However, if natural techniques do not bring improvement, it is important to consult a doctor, as it could be a sign of more serious conditions.

  • Do not use Ginkgo biloba during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Consult your doctor if you are taking anticoagulants or antidepressants at the same time.

Expert advice

Lifestyle is one of the factors that can contribute to foot numbness.

In fact, the cause of numbness may be linked to a poor diet lacking in nutrients essential for good health, increased exposure to toxins such as heavy metals and alcohol, or certain treatments like chemotherapy.

A balanced lifestyle—based on a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and effective stress and sleep management—can therefore help prevent the onset of these types of symptoms.
