Native to Asia and the symbol of the city of Tokyo, the ginkgo_(Ginkgo biloba L._ ) has existed for hundreds of millions of years, sometimes earning it the nickname of "living fossil". It is known for its remarkable resistance to extreme conditions, climate change and other disturbances, and can live for more than 1,000 years. It is the last member of the Ginkgoaceae family. This tree can grow up to 30 metres tall, with flat, fan-shaped leaves.
Sometimes called the "silver apricot", the ginkgo was also nicknamed the "forty-crore tree", because of the superb yellow colour of its leaves when autumn arrives, which form a golden carpet at its feet when they fall; but also because of its very high price when it was introduced into Europe in the 18th century . Ginkgo is a dioecious plant, meaning that it can be male or female, but you can't tell the difference until around twenty years after the first flowers have bloomed. The 'female' flowers have a characteristic odour when they begin to decay: this is one of the ways in which they can be distinguished. Ginkgo has been used in traditional Asian medicine for centuries for its many benefits. In China in particular, the fruit stones are used to treat respiratory problems such as coughs and asthma. Today, scientists are more interested in the properties of ginkgo leaves. Rich in flavones, flavonoids, biolavones, glycosides and other interesting active ingredients, they have long been used to boost cognitive function, improve memory and improve blood circulation.
