INCI Name : Cyanocobalamin

VEGAN

BIOCHEMICAL COMPOSITION

Vitamin B12, or cyanocobalamin, belongs to the cobalamin family, a group of water-soluble vitamins characterized by the presence of a cobalt atom at the center of their molecular structure.

Vitamin B12 : what effect does it have on the skin ?

Vitamin B12 is known for its soothing properties. It plays a role in regulating certain skin inflammatory mechanisms. It helps limit the production of inflammatory mediators and modulate the release of histamine, a molecule involved in skin reactions such as itching, redness, or feelings of discomfort.

These properties explain its value in skincare products for sensitive, reactive, or atopic skin, where it helps reduce feelings of skin discomfort, itching, tingling, or tightness, and to reduce the appearance of redness.

Skin tolerance

A note from Adeline Nalin, our Head Pharmacist and Toxicologist at Aroma-Zone

“Vitamin B12, or cyanocobalamin, is an essential vitamin for the human body, with recommended daily intakes of approximately 2 to 4 µg per day for adults (EFSA). It is a large molecule (molecular weight > 1,000 Da), which significantly limits its ability to cross the skin barrier and results in negligible percutaneous penetration.

In cosmetic products, Vitamin B12 is used at very low concentrations and exhibits excellent skin tolerance at these levels. Available data indicate that it is neither irritating nor toxic to the skin under normal conditions of use.

Cases of hypersensitivity or allergy have been reported in the scientific literature, primarily in medical contexts (parenteral administration, high doses) or following exposure to concentrations far higher than those found in cosmetics. These adverse effects are not considered relevant for standard topical cosmetic use.

A slight, temporary pinkish discoloration of the skin may occasionally be observed after application. This effect is reversible, has no clinical consequences, and disappears spontaneously.”

A safe ingredient for your health

A note from our Aroma-Zone Toxicologist

“Vitamin B12 is widely used in cosmetics and has a favorable safety profile, offering real benefits for the skin, particularly in formulations designed for sensitive or fragile skin. At the concentrations used in cosmetic products, cyanocobalamin is non-irritating and non-sensitizing for the vast majority of users.

However, as with any ingredient, rare cases of allergic contact dermatitis have been reported in the literature, generally linked to exposure to high concentrations or in individuals with a particular predisposition to allergies. As a precaution, for individuals with a history of skin reactions to vitamins or very reactive skin, it is recommended to perform a patch test in the inner elbow 48 hours before widespread use.”

“Vitamin B12, or cyanocobalamin, is a relatively new active ingredient in cosmetology, renowned for its soothing properties, making it an ideal ingredient for the care of sensitive or reactive skin.”

The Vitamin B12 has an interesting characteristic in cosmetic formulations: its naturally pink color, which stems from its chemical structure containing a cobalt atom. When incorporated into a formula, it can thus impart a pinkish tint to the finished product without the need to add colorants.

FAQ

Does Vitamin B12 have an effect on acne or blemishes?

Vitamin B12 is not an active ingredient traditionally used to treat acne. Breakouts are generally linked to several factors: excess sebum, clogged pores, bacterial overgrowth, and local inflammation. Ingredients such as Salicylic acid, azelaic acid, or niacinamide are generally more suitable.

However, it can be beneficial as a supplement, particularly when the skin is weakened, sensitized, or dry—for example, due to treatments. In this context, it helps soothe feelings of discomfort and support skin comfort.

Why are Vitamin B12 skincare products often pink?

The characteristic pink color of many skincare products containing Vitamin B12 comes directly from the molecule itself. Cyanocobalamin has a unique chemical structure with a cobalt atom at the center of the molecule, which naturally gives it a reddish-pink hue.

In some cosmetic formulas, this coloring may slightly tint the texture of the product. This color has no impact on the product’s effectiveness and generally does not leave a lasting tint on the skin. In rare cases, a slight, temporary pinkish tint may appear after application, but it disappears quickly.

At what concentrations is Vitamin B12 effective in cosmetics?

In cosmetics, Vitamin B12 is used in very low concentrations. At these levels, Vitamin B12 can be incorporated into formulas designed for sensitive or fragile skin, where it helps soothe discomfort and support skin balance, while offering good tolerance.

How long does it take to see the effects of a Vitamin B12 skincare product?

The time it takes to see results may vary depending on the product formulation and the skin’s initial condition. In products designed for sensitive skin, soothing active ingredients can provide relatively quick relief from discomfort.

For example, in the case of the Vitamin B12 & Prebiotics Concentrated Serum, clinical tests show soothed skin as early as 1 minute* after application and a 23% reduction in redness after 2 hours**.

In the longer term, regular use helps strengthen the skin barrier and sustainably improve skin comfort, which helps limit the onset of new sensations of discomfort.

* Clinical assessment conducted by a dermatologist on 32 volunteers after 28 days of twice-daily use. ** Instrumental measurement conducted on 20 volunteers using an active ingredient from the Vitamin B12 & Prebiotics Serum in a similar formulation.
