BIOCHEMICAL COMPOSITION

The major amino acids that make up the collagen naturally present in the skin are proline, hydroxyproline, glycine, and hydroxylysine. Biomimetic collagen peptides are complexes containing these amino acids and replicating the amino acid profile of our skin’s collagen.

TRACEABILITY & SUSTAINABILITY

Naturally derived active ingredient. The biomimetic collagen peptides used in cosmetics at Aroma-Zone are produced using biotechnology. The collagen amino acids are produced through the fermentation of sugars and the hydrolysis of plant proteins.

Biomimetic Collagen Peptides and amino acids : what effect does it have on the skin?

Collagen is a structural protein found in connective tissues, such as cartilage and the dermis. Within the dermis, collagen forms a network with elastin and hyaluronic acid, which gels upon contact with water. It makes the skin firm, elastic, and plump. Collagen levels tend to decrease with age. Unfortunately, collagen molecules are too large to be absorbed by the skin when incorporated into cosmetics. This is why ingredients containing smaller fragments of collagen have been developed: collagen peptides and collagen amino acids.

Collagen peptides and amino acids do not spontaneously reform collagen, but they offer other benefits: thanks to their high affinity for water, they improve skin hydration. They stimulate the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, as well as the proliferation of epidermal cells, accelerating skin regeneration. Wrinkles are reduced, and the skin is firmer and plumper.

Biomimetic Collagen Peptides and amino acids : scientifically proven efficiency

Biomimetic collagen peptides have proven efficacy in firming, toning, and redensifying the skin; reducing signs of aging (wrinkles, fine lines, loss of firmness, lack of elasticity), improving skin hydration and enhancing the skin’s barrier function by strengthening the structure of extracellular lipids (reinforces the skin’s lipid barrier) for redensified, restructured, more supple, and softer skin. It promotes skin repair and stimulates the proliferation of keratinocytes (skin cells) for regenerated skin. It penetrates into the deep layers of the epidermis, thanks to the low molecular weight of the peptides and amino acids.

Skin tolerance

A note from Adeline Nalin, our Head Pharmacist and Toxicologist at Aroma-Zone

“Biomimetic collagen peptides and amino acids exhibit excellent skin biocompatibility, even on sensitive skin, due to their molecular structure, which is similar to that of the endogenous collagen found in the dermis. This tolerance has been demonstrated up to a concentration of 1.2% in our facial serum.  Collagen improves elasticity and hydration and visibly reduces the signs of aging.”

A safe ingredient for your health

A note from our Aroma-Zone Toxicologist

“Collagen is a molecule composed of three polypeptide chains, each containing approximately 1,000 amino acids in a primary sequence rich in proline, hydroxyproline, and hydroxylysine. It is the main component of the skin (accounting for 70 to 80% of the dry weight of the dermis) and connective tissue, and constitutes the organic substance of bones and teeth. It is therefore considered safe for human health.”

A note from the Dermatologist

“Biomimetic collagen peptides and amino acids are ‘high-tech’ active ingredients that mimic the natural components of our skin and help stimulate collagen production and improve skin elasticity.

They’re great to incorporate into an anti-aging routine, especially if you’re looking to improve your skin’s hydration, texture, and elasticity. They’re well-tolerated and therefore suitable for all skin types.

Tip: For best results, apply regularly under your moisturizer.”

Formulation focus with the Aroma-Zone R&D laboratory

Since collagen is a large protein composed of multiple peptides and amino acids, its entire molecule cannot penetrate the skin. In formulations, biomimetic peptides are therefore used, which replicate a specific collagen sequence also found in marine collagen. They are also easy to formulate, pose no particular constraints, and provide effective hydration. Finally, combining amino acids with the peptide further enhances its effects and optimizes its performance on the skin.

FAQ

How do biomimetic peptides activate fibroblasts to stimulate collagen synthesis?

Collagen peptides and amino acids do not directly activate the fibroblasts present in the dermis, but they offer other significant benefits. Thanks to their high affinity for water, they improve skin hydration and promote an environment more conducive to the synthesis of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. They also support the proliferation of epidermal cells, which accelerates skin regeneration. As a result, the skin gains firmness and elasticity, and wrinkles appear reduced.

Do biomimetic collagen peptides actually penetrate the skin, and to what depth?

Yes. Our biomimetic collagen peptides have a low molecular weight, allowing them to penetrate the deep layers of the epidermis. They effectively reach the epidermal layer where they stimulate keratinocyte proliferation, thereby supporting skin hydration, repair, and firmness.

Can peptides work in synergy with other anti-aging ingredients such as retinol or vitamin C?

Peptides can work in synergy with, for example, retinol or vitamin C.

In the case of vitamin C, it is ideal to complement your collagen regimen with vitamin C to promote collagen synthesis, either as a dietary supplement or by adopting a diet rich in vitamin C sources. In fact, vitamin C is an essential cofactor for collagen production. Biomimetic peptides, on the other hand, help improve skin hydration and the skin’s environment. Combining them therefore makes biological sense, even though clinical data evaluating a direct synergy remain limited.

How does this differ from marine collagen peptides?

Marine collagen powder

Marine and vegan collagen peptides differ in several ways:

The origin and nature of the ingredient

Vegan biomimetic collagen peptides are derived from plant-based amino acids, whereas marine collagen peptides come from the skin, cartilage, or bones of fish or crustaceans.

Biomimetic peptides do not contain animal collagen: they simply replicate the amino acid profile of the collagen found in the skin. Conversely, hydrolyzed marine collagen is actual collagen that has been broken down into peptides through enzymatic hydrolysis.

Mode of action

Biomimetic peptides act locally in the epidermis to produce a "collagen-like" effect: they biomimetically replicate the effects of collagen on the skin, thereby improving its overall appearance.

Marine collagen, on the other hand, provides the body with amino acids that support the natural production of collagen in the skin as well as in other tissues such as joints and tendons.

The main objective

Biomimetic peptides are primarily designed to improve skin firmness, density, and hydration when used topically, while marine collagen peptides are intended to work from within to address the natural age-related decline in collagen and support the overall health of the skin and connective tissues.
