Bakuchiol Aroma-Zone Profile

INCI Name: Bakuchiol

VEGAN

BIOCHEMICAL COMPOSITION

Bakuchiol is a compound in the meroterpene family found in the seeds of Babchi (Psoralea corylifolia), an Asian plant used in Ayurvedic medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties.

TRACEABILITY / SUSTAINABILITY

Naturally derived active ingredient. The Bakuchiol used by Aroma-Zone is extracted from Babchi seeds and highly purified to eliminate all traces of phototoxic compounds present in the plant.

Bakuchiol: What Effect Does It Have on the Skin?

Bakuchiol is a natural molecule with both anti-aging (or pro-aging!) and anti-blemish properties, effective even at low doses. When it comes to skin aging, it protects the skin from damage caused by free radicals thanks to its antioxidant activity. It also stimulates collagen synthesis—which is responsible for the firmness of the dermis—and limits its breakdown by enzymes called “metalloproteinases.” The facial contour is firmed, and wrinkles are softened. For blemish-prone skin, Bakuchiol reduces sebum production and minimizes hyperpigmentation spots hyperpigmentation caused by blackheads. By regulating inflammatory mediators, it relieves discomfort and irritation in acne-prone skin. Bakuchiol’s antimicrobial activity against Propionibacterium acnes also contributes to its effectiveness against blackheads. The skin is mattified and purified.

Bakuchiol: Scientifically Proven Efficiency

A study showed that a cream containing 0.5% Bakuchiol was just as effective as a cream containing 0.5% retinol at combating signs of aging. After 12 weeks, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation spots were reduced.

Skin Tolerance

A Note from Adeline Nalin, Head Pharmacist and Toxicologist at Aroma-Zone

Adeline Nalin blouse

“Bakuchiol is a plant-based ingredient and a natural alternative to retinol. It has undergone extensive tolerance testing (including skin, eye, phototoxicity, and skin sensitization tests); concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 1% in a facial formula are generally well-tolerated (results from in vitro and clinical tests).”

A Safe Ingredient for your Health

A Note from Our Aroma-Zone Toxicologist

“The formulation of the product is important and can amplify the effects of bakuchiol, which, although it remains a gentle and natural alternative, can have a stronger effect depending on the formulation, the final concentration in the product, and individual sensitivities. It is recommended to introduce bakuchiol gradually, limiting yourself to 4 drops of serum per day, to ensure your skin tolerates it well.”

A note from the Dermatologist

“Bakuchiol is a very good natural and gentler alternative to retinoids (Retinol, etc.). It improves hyperpigmentation and smooths skin texture, making it a great ally for mature, oily, and/or blemish-prone skin. Better tolerated, it is ideal for people whose skin reacts poorly to retinoids or who are hesitant to use them.

However, its effects are more gradual and often less noticeable, requiring regular, long-term use. You can apply it in the evening (and/or in the morning, depending on your skin type and tolerance) in combination with a moisturizer.

Warning : Bakuchiol should be avoided if you have a history of eczema or particularly sensitive or reactive skin.”
