“Phytosterols have a chemical structure similar to the skin’s natural lipids, which helps them integrate well into the hydrolipidic film. They are therefore very well tolerated by the skin and suitable for all skin types.”

A Safe Ingredient for your Health

A Note from Our Aroma-Zone Toxicologist

A Note from the Dermatologist

“Phytosterols strengthen the skin barrier, help retain moisture and soothe redness or feelings of discomfort. They are particularly recommended if you have irritated, dry or dehydrated skin, or if your skin feels tight.

Often combined with other lipids such as ceramides, they help to protect the skin and make it more supple. Be careful, however, if you have oily or blemish-prone skin, as oily textures can cause or worsen acne.”

Formulation Focus with the Aroma-Zone R&D Laboratory

In cosmetic formulations, phytosterols are fat-soluble active ingredients that are incorporated into the oil phase. Derived from pine, they have a high affinity for skin lipids and act as analogues of cholesterol, which is naturally present in the stratum corneum, within the lipid cement. By mimicking the cholesterol in the lipid cement (alongside ceramides and fatty acids, which also make up this lipid cement), they help to strengthen the cohesion of the skin barrier. The skin is therefore better able to withstand external aggressions, with a reduction in feelings of discomfort, dryness and irritation.

For Which Skin Types?
