Find out more
Field Horsetail is a primitive plant found throughout the northern hemisphere in a wide range of temperate environments, often growing along roadsides. Belonging to the same phylum as ferns, it neither flowers nor produces seeds. Also known as “bottle brush”, “foxtail rush”, or “snake grass”, it has a thread-like stem that may be either fertile or sterile. The ancient Greeks used it to control bleeding from skin wounds, while the Romans ate it in salads for its tonic properties.
In the past, it was used in cabinet-making to polish wood, but also to scour containers and clean dishes.
Horsetail has a complex, rich composition, particularly in its aerial parts. It contains lipids and trace elements that help nourish the skin.
Its astringent and antioxidant action purifies and tones the face. Horsetail's high silicon content gives it numerous therapeutic and cosmetic benefits. This chemical element contributes to skin firmness and tone. It has a structure that enables it to retain water and make it available for skin hydration. It also stimulates collagen synthesis, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and accelerate the healing process.
In cosmetics, Horsetail is well known for its strengthening, purifying, and anti-hair-loss properties in haircare products, as well as its toning and firming effects in skincare, particularly for the bust area.
In phytotherapy, Horsetail is valued for its high silicon content and mineral-restoring effects. Traditionally, it has been used in herbal teas to ease rheumatism, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, urinary issues, menorrhagia and internal inflammation, and to support fracture healing. It has also long been used to help treat eczema, acne, scabs, minor wounds and venous ulcers.
