Organic Carrot Oil Macerate

Inositol

Derived from carob pulp and 100% natural, Inositol intensifies and prolongs tanning by activating tyrosinase, a key enzyme in melanin synthesis. Oligobronze

Melanin and Melanogenesis

Melanogenesis is the process by which the skin produces melanin.

Melanin is the pigment responsible for skin color and tanning. The skin contains two main types of melanin:

eumelanin, which is brown to black in color and has strong photoprotective properties;
pheomelanin, which is yellow to red in color and has more limited protective properties.

Melanogenesis takes place in small structures called melanosomes (a), located inside melanocytes (b), which are found in the deepest layer of the epidermis.

Using an amino acid naturally present in the skin, tyrosine, and under the action of an enzyme called tyrosinase, melanocytes produce melanin within the melanosomes. Once produced, melanin is stored in the melanosomes, which are then transferred to the keratinocytes (c). As the keratinocytes move upward toward the upper layers of the epidermis, the melanosomes break down and release melanin (d). This melanin spreads across the surface of the epidermis, giving it its color and forming a natural barrier against UV rays.

Differences in skin pigmentation are due to the proportion of each type of melanin synthesized and the size/quantity of the melanosomes:

Dark skin has more and larger melanosomes, which primarily produce eumelanin.
Light skin has fewer, smaller melanosomes that produce mostly pheomelanin.

These differences are natural: we cannot control the amount or type of melanin our skin produces. We can only stimulate its production.

Key steps in melanogenesis

1.A stimulus activates melanocytes (e.g., UV light) via signals transmitted from the superficial layers.

2.Melanocytes produce melanin from tyrosine within the melanosomes.

3.Melanin is stored in the melanosomes.

4.The melanosomes are transferred to skin cells (keratinocytes) via the extensions of the melanocytes.

5.Keratinocytes containing the melanosomes gradually migrate toward the skin’s surface; the melanosomes break down and release melanin.

6.Melanin spreads throughout the skin, coloring it and protecting it from UV rays.
