Curly hair: characteristics and needs

Curly hair is distinguished by its unique structure, which makes it different from straight or wavy hair. Its spiral or curly shape is the result of the uneven distribution of keratin along the hair follicle. Unlike straight hair, where keratin is evenly distributed, curly hair has a higher concentration of keratin on one side of the follicle, creating asymmetry and giving the hair its distinctive wavy or curly shape.

This particular composition makes curly hair more susceptible to dryness and frizz. The curvature of the curl makes it difficult for the natural oils produced by the scalp to move along the hair shaft, resulting in uneven hydration and moisture loss. In addition, the outer cuticle of curly hair is often more porous than that of straight hair, making curls more prone to damage and breakage.

To meet the specific needs of curly hair, it's essential to use moisturising and nourishing products that help maintain moisture, strengthen the hair fibre and minimise frizz. Plant oils are particularly beneficial for nourishing and softening curls, while moisturising agents such as Aloe vera gel help to maintain the hair's moisture balance and define curls with suppleness.

What other oils should I choose for curly hair?

For curly hair, certain plant oils are particularly beneficial because of their nourishing and moisturising properties. Coconut oil, rich in essential fatty acids, penetrates deep into the hair fibre to moisturise and soften curls while reducing frizz. Avocado oil is also recommended for its nourishing and strengthening properties, ideal for revitalising curly hair and improving its elasticity. In addition, Sweet Almond oil is valued for its ability to deeply moisturise hair and soothe sensitive scalps, while Jojoba oil, similar to the hair's natural sebum, helps to balance sebum production and prevent excess dryness or oiliness. By incorporating these oils into your hair routine, you can help nourish, hydrate and strengthen your curls for stronger, shinier, healthier hair.

Curly hair routine: our tips

Tip 1

Adopt the Co-wash method to give your curls a boost between washes. Curly hair is generally dry and needs to be shampooed as infrequently as possible to avoid drying it out even more. Co-Washing (Conditioner Wash) consists of washing your hair only with a conditioner to moisturise and remove impurities. You'll be able to detangle and redefine your curls to your heart's content! The rest of the time, preferably once a week, opt for a gentle, nourishing shampoo to prevent curly hair from breaking.

Tip No. 2

To tame your curls, use the same active ingredients and products as for straight hair. To smooth frizz and give your curly hair a beautiful new look, opt for a Phyto'liss leave-in smoothing serum, ideal for relaxing curls. Apply preferably to damp hair and style by running your fingers through the strands or using a wide-tooth comb. Always detangle your hair gently, starting at the ends and ending at the roots to define your curls and prevent breakage.

Tip no. 3

Avoid heated appliances, which dry out the hair fibre and encourage split ends. Instead, air-dry your hair or turn your hairdryer on cool. To redefine your curls, avoid curling tongs and irons and opt instead for a curling cream to moisturise the lengths and give your curly hair bounce and suppleness. Finish with a dab of styling mousse to hold your beautiful curls in place.

Tip 4

With the right care, your curly hair can benefit perfectly from colouring. However, avoid chemical colourings, which tend to dry out the hair and make it more fragile. Opt for natural colours ranging from Golden-blonde Henna to Ebony Black Henna and Copper Henna, which will revive your natural colour and add beautiful highlights to your curly hair. The smoothing and fortifying properties of henna help to strengthen the ends and make curls more supple.

Expert advice

Curly hair often shows signs of dryness in the lengths. To restore suppleness and bounce, it's important to moisturise with products containing Aloe vera, Hyaluronic Acid or Vegetable Glycerine. This will leave curly hair softer and easier to detangle. To strengthen curly hair and reduce breakage, it's important to nourish it with plant oils and butters, which will also help to maintain the hair's natural moisture. Nourishing treatments will help prevent split ends and strengthen the hair fibre, making it easier to form curls.
