Colour that fades, highlights that lose their shine, ends that lose their softness after just a few weeks... Colouring your hair, even when done with care, weakens the hair fibre and makes it more susceptible to external damage. What are the best practices for preserving the vibrancy of your colour without causing further damage to your hair? In this article, we take a look at the specific needs of coloured hair and present our selection of top-rated protective care products, favoured by our community and endorsed by our experts.

In brief

  • Colouring weakens the hair fibre by opening the cuticle scales, making it more porous, more prone to dehydration and more vulnerable to gradual colour fading

  • Protecting coloured hair requires suitable products that seal the hair shaft, minimise pigment loss and preserve shine, from gentle shampoos to leave-in treatments

  • This article presents a selection of Aroma-Zone haircare products designed to prolong the vibrancy of your colour whilst maintaining the health of your hair, from washing to heat protection.

Why should I look after my coloured hair?

  1. Hair colouring opens the cuticle scales

Hair colouring opens the cuticle scales to allow the pigment to penetrate the hair fibre, which causes long-term damage to the hair, making it more porous and more susceptible to dehydration and gradual colour loss. (1)

Colouring your hair, whether using chemical or plant-based dyes, involves a profound change to the hair’s structure, with several direct consequences for its health and long-term condition.

  • Long-term increased porosity: once the cuticle has opened to allow the pigment to penetrate, it never closes completely on its own. The hair becomes more porous, which facilitates exchange with the outside environment: water evaporates more easily from inside the fibre, hence the dryness frequently observed in coloured hair. (1, 4)

  • Increased sensitivity to UV light: the the sun’s rays oxidise the colour molecules lodged in the cortex, causing gradual dulling and highlights that change over time — a phenomenon that is even more pronounced on light-coloured hair or highlights. (2, 3).

  • Pigment loss with every wash: every shampoo causes a slight loss of colour through the open cuticle, which is even more pronounced if the shampoo is harsh or the water is very hot. (3)

  • Increased mechanical fragility: hair that is porous and weakened is more prone to breakage, split ends and loss of shine, which makes 2protective hair care products all the more useful for preserving both the colour and the health of the hair. (1, 5, 6).

Given this multi-faceted weakening of the coloured hair fibre, 3taking care of your coloured hair remains the best defence: a gentle shampoo, a coating conditioner and regular hair masks work together to seal the cuticle, limit pigment loss and counteract porosity, rather than allowing the colour and hair fibre to deteriorate with each wash.

What products should you use to protect coloured hair?

The most suitable care products for coloured hair combine gentle cleansing with lipid-replenishing and coating active ingredients that seal the hair fibre, along with systematic protection against UV rays and heat, to slow down pigment loss and preserve shine.

Key principles

Things to bear in mind

Cleanse without stripping

A shampoo that’s too harsh accelerates pigment loss with every wash. It is better to opt for a gentle formula, free from harsh sulphates, and to limit the frequency of washes to minimise colour loss. (3)

Seal the cuticle with coating agents

Active ingredients such as plant-based ceramides or keratin smooth the hair cuticle, which limits interaction with the external environment and helps retain the pigment for longer. (5, 6)

Moisturise to counteract porosity

Coloured hair loses moisture more easily: regular moisturising treatments – whether leave-in or as a mask – help to counteract this porosity and prevent the hair from becoming straw-like. (1, 4)

Always protect against UV rays

Sun exposure oxidises colour pigments and accelerates their breakdown. Applying a protective oil or spray before each exposure to the sun or swim helps to limit this gradual fading. (2, 3)

Limit heat damage

Straighteners, hairdryers, curling irons: heat further weakens an already porous hair fibre. Applying a heat protectant beforehand is essential to preserve both the colour and the structure of the hair. (6)

Space out washes with very hot or hard water

Hard water and excessively hot water open the cuticle further. Rinsing with lukewarm water, possibly acidified (with diluted vinegar), helps to close the hair fibre and seal in the colour. (1, 3)

This selection focuses on coating and lipid-replenishing active ingredients — keratin, plant-based ceramides, proteins — recognised for their protective effect on coloured hair fibres. Our experts’ views

  1. Beyond hair care products, what habits should you adopt to better protect coloured hair?

To keep coloured hair looking its best for longer, haircare products are important, but daily habits are just as crucial. Limiting exposure to the sun, reducing the use of heat, spacing out colouring and bleaching treatments, and avoiding excessive rubbing all help to better preserve the hair fibre. After swimming in the sea or a swimming pool, remember to rinse your hair with clean water. These simple steps help to maintain the colour’s vibrancy, the hair’s softness and the quality of the hair fibre for longer.

Precautions

As with any hair care product, it is recommended that you carry out a sensitivity test 48 hours before first use, particularly with concentrated active ingredients. As coloured hair is more porous and sensitive, it is best to limit and space out exposure to heat and sunlight, as these accelerate colour loss and further weaken the hair fibre. The products, active ingredients and other ingredients mentioned in this article may each have their own specific precautions and restrictions on use: please always refer to our technical data sheets.
