How do you follow a course of treatment with a Cynatine® keratin dietary supplement?

Are you familiar with the word ‘keratin’? You’ve probably heard it in adverts, or read it on dozens of shampoo bottles. However, few people know exactly what keratin is and what this protein can do for the health, strength and beauty of our nails and hair. In this article, we take a closer look at the role of keratin and the benefits of keratin-based dietary supplements for addressing any potential deficiencies. The result? Firm, hydrated skin, stronger nails, and strong, soft and silky hair.

What is keratin?

When we think of proteins, we often associate them with our muscles. However, they are the fundamental building blocks of our entire body. Muscles, hormones, antibodies, haemoglobin, skin, hair… Proteins are everywhere!

Keratin is a fibrous, helical (spiral-shaped) protein that forms the main structure of our hair, nails and skin. It is produced naturally by our bodies from amino acids. It is not found directly in our diet.

Keratin is the most abundant protein in the hair fibre. It is made up of 18 amino acids, including cysteine and methionine, two sulphur-containing amino acids.

Rich in sulphur and fibrous in nature, keratin takes the form of long, strong fibres that coil around one another to form a structure that is solid, resilient and supple all at once. It therefore ensures that our hair is waterproof, protected, resistant to damage and shiny. Finally, it also acts as a heat shield, up to around 100 °C.

Keratin is not replenished within the hair: it is gradually depleted over the course of the hair’s life. Unfortunately, factors such as ageing, an unhealthy diet and excessive exposure to stress can cause keratin levels to decline more rapidly, resulting in hair and nails that are brittle, dull and prone to breakage.

How can you address a keratin deficiency?

There are several ways to address a keratin deficiency. These include:

Through your diet: Eat protein-rich foods such as fish, eggs and pulses. The amino acids they contain will promote keratin production, as will sufficient and consistent hydration.

Through targeted hair care: Choose shampoos, masks or serums enriched with keratin to nourish your hair.

Through dietary supplements: Enriched with keratin, these supplements are an effective way to strengthen your hair and nails from the inside.

What is a keratin dietary supplement? What does it contain?

A keratin-based dietary supplement is designed to boost the body’s keratin intake. Usually available in capsule or powder form, it contains hydrolysed keratin, a form of keratin that can be easily absorbed by the body.

It is common for this type of supplement to be combined with other nutrients such as biotin (vitamin B8), zinc or vitamin B6, which promote keratin synthesis and boost hair health and nail health. Thanks to its rich, natural composition, it helps to restore the keratin structure in a targeted manner.

What are the benefits of a keratin dietary supplement?

Keratin-based dietary supplements have multiple benefits for the hair, nails and skin. Here are their benefits

For hair

  • It strengthens the hair’s structure from within, making it more resistant to external aggressors (pollution, UV rays, heat from hairdryers or straighteners) and the risk of breakage.

  • Repairs hair damaged by chemical treatments, bleaching and straightening, by filling gaps in the cuticle and making it look more beautiful, silky and supple.

  • Adds shine and softness to dull or coarse hair.

  • Reduces hair loss during brushing (improved resistance in a tensile strength test).

  • Increases the number of hairs in the anagen (growth) phase and reduces the number in the telogen (shedding) phase: this dietary supplement is therefore ideal for slowing hair loss and promoting hair growth.

For your nails

  • Gives nails their strength, hardness and resilience, prevents them from becoming soft and reduces the risk of breakage.

  • Promotes nail growth whilst preventing splitting.

  • Improves the appearance of the nails: more even colour and texture

For the skin

  • Improves skin elasticity.

  • Helps maintain good skin hydration.

  • Helps protect skin cells against oxidative stress.

  • Reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

  • Improves skin tone and firmness: an increase in protein content in the upper layer of the skin has been observed

How do you take a keratin course of treatment?

When should you take a keratin treatment?

A keratin treatment is particularly recommended for your hair or nails when:

Brittle, fragile hair: Keratin strengthens the hair shaft and prevents breakage. By strengthening the hair shaft, it also reduces the risk of hair loss caused by brittle hair.

Dull hair: It restores natural shine and gives the hair a smoother appearance.

Hair exposed to external aggressors: Keratin forms a protective barrier against pollution and UV rays.

Split or brittle nails: Keratin supports the growth of strong, healthy nails.

When should you take them?

With meals: To incorporate keratin supplements into your daily routine, it is advisable to take them preferably with a meal. If you opt for the powder form, you can mix it with a liquid such as water, fruit juice or a smoothie to make it easier to take. Capsules can be swallowed with a glass of water. Of course, we strongly recommend that you prioritise a balanced diet rich in protein (sulphur-rich amino acids) and essential nutrients to promote healthy hair from within.

What results can you expect?

  • Smoother, more radiant and softer skin

  • Stronger, shinier and fuller hair

  • Less brittle, stronger, harder and more beautiful nails.

Dosage

The recommended dose is 500 mg per day, with a minimum course of treatment lasting 30 days.  For best results, it is recommended that you follow a course of treatment lasting around three months, taking your supplements daily, preferably in the morning, with a glass of water. Make sure to combine this treatment with a balanced diet and a skincare routine tailored to your needs. Results may be visible after just 4 to 6 weeks of use.

Expert advice

I’d advise you to start your keratin regimen gently. Personally, I always recommend combining it with a protein-rich diet, particularly including oily fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel, etc.) and eggs. This will make the treatment all the more effective! Finally, don’t forget to adapt your hair care routine: keratin-based hair care products are your allies in maximising the benefits of the supplements. And above all, be patient – results won’t be visible for a few weeks.
