Make-up remover oils and balms are based on the same principle: oil dissolves oil. However, these two methods of make-up removal differ in terms of their texture and sensory experience. Depending on your skin type, the make-up you’ve worn and the look you’re aiming for, one will be more suitable than the other. Whether it’s make-up remover oil or balm, this article will help you choose.

In brief

  • Make-up remover oil and balm are suitable for all skin types: the oil, which is fluid and light, is good for for quick make-up removal, whilst the make-up remover balm is appreciated for its richer, melt-in texture.

  • Both options fit perfectly into the first step of the double-cleansing routine and effectively remove make-up, sun cream and impurities.

Effectiveness

Lifts away oils (make-up, sebum, SPF) and washes them away when rinsed off, even waterproof products

Lifts away oils (make-up, sebum, SPF) and washes them away, even waterproof products and heavy make-up

Which option should you choose for double cleansing?

As a reminder, double cleansing is a two-step facial cleansing method: first, an oil-based product to dissolve make-up, sun cream and excess sebum, followed by a water-based cleanser to remove sweat, dust and other water-soluble residues. It leaves your skin perfectly clean without damaging the skin barrier, and makes it more receptive to subsequent skincare products.

For double cleansing, an oil or make-up remover balm are ideal as the first step in the routine. Both types of make-up remover work on the principle of ‘oil dissolving oil’. The choice depends mainly on skin type, the make-up being worn and the desired sensory experience.

  1. A Word from Our Formulation Team

“This cleansing balm stands out for its richer, more enveloping texture compared to a cleansing oil, while remaining perfectly easy to rinse off. On contact with the skin, it transforms into an oil that effectively dissolves makeup pigments, before turning into a milky emulsion thanks to naturally derived solubilising agents.

Oat oil, naturally rich in ceramides and phytosterols, is combined with an active ingredient extracted from pine, rich in phytosterols and structurally similar to cholesterol. Together, they provide the formula with biomimetic lipids naturally present in the skin barrier. This synergy contributes to gentle cleansing while respecting the skin's natural balance.”

Precautions

When trying a new make-up remover oil or balm, remember to test your skin’s tolerance before applying it to your whole face, especially around the eyes. To do this, apply a small amount of the product to a discreet area (the crook of your elbow, the inside of your wrist or behind your ear). Leave the product on without rinsing for 24 to 48 hours and check for any redness, itching, burning, spots or swelling. If you experience an obvious reaction, stop using the product immediately and consult a healthcare professional if necessary.

You can also check the INCI list for the cleansing oil or balm to identify any fragrances, essential oils, preservatives or surfactants known to be potentially irritating. If you have sensitive skin, opt for formulas designed for reactive skin.

Expert advice

Cleansing the skin properly before applying your skincare routine using a make-up remover oil or balm helps to remove excess sebum, pollution particles, make-up residue and other impurities that clog the pores and act as a barrier between the skin and the products. On clean skin, the pores are unclogged and the skin’s surface is more receptive, allowing active ingredients (moisturising, soothing, anti-ageing, etc.) to penetrate the epidermis more effectively and deliver their full benefits.
