What is double cleansing?

Rooted in Asian skincare traditions, the practice of double cleansing is considered an integral part of any skincare routine.

At the end of the day, there are two types of impurities on your skin: oily impurities, such as sebum, pollution, and makeup, and water-based impurities, consisting of dust and sweat. However, these cannot be removed in the same way, hence the need for double cleansing.

As its name suggests, double cleansing involves two steps:

  1. Makeup removal : using an oil-based product (cleansing oil, balm, or milk), dissolve makeup and pollution residue, as well as any excess sebum. How does it work? The oil dissolves the oily impurities on the skin.

  2. Cleansing : using a water-based cleanser (cleansing gel, cleansing cream, or micellar water), water-based impurities such as sweat and dust are removed. This step aims to deeply purify the skin while leaving afeeling of freshness on the face.

Why double cleanse your skin?

Double cleansing removes all impurities (makeup, sunscreen, pollution, sebum, sweat) in two complementary steps, leaving your skin truly clean and ready for your beauty routine. An initial oil-based product dissolves lipophilic impurities, followed by a water-based cleanser to remove hydrophilic residues. Double cleansing helps prevent blemishes, maintain a smoother skin texture, and improve the penetration of active ingredients without stripping the skin barrier.

What are the benefits?

  • Deep cleansing :Thanks to these two steps, double cleansing effectively removes all impurities, particles, makeup, and residue that accumulate on the skin's surface throughout the day.

  • Skin preparation :By removing surface impurities, double cleansing prepares the skin to absorb other skincare products more effectively. The skin becomes more receptive to the active ingredients contained in serums, moisturizers, and targeted treatments applied afterwards.

  • Removal of stubborn residue :The second step of double cleansing helps to dislodge residual impurities and unclog pores, leaving the skin feeling fresh and light.

  • Unclogged pores and refined skin texture: By keeping pores clean and unclogged, double cleansing contributes to a more even skin texture and a visually smoother appearance. This action contributes to clearer skin on a daily basis by limiting the accumulation of residue that can disrupt the skin's balance.

  • Improved skin texture: By removing dead skin cells and tightening pores, double cleansing helps improve skin texture, giving it a smoother, more even appearance.

  • Reduction of imperfections : By leaving the skin clear, the double cleansing routine prevents the appearance of blackheads and other imperfections.

  • Radiant complexion and skin comfort: By removing impurities and dead cells, double cleansing allows the skin to better reflect light, for a visibly brighter and fresher complexion, even without makeup. By respecting the skin's balance, it also helps to preserve the skin's suppleness and limit feelings of discomfort after cleansing.

How to double cleanse? The step-by-step routine to adopt

  1. Use an oil-based makeup remover : Start your double cleansing routine by applying an oil-based makeup remover to your dry skin to dissolve makeup and impurities. Warm the product slightly between your palms, then apply it to your entire dry face (including your eyes and lips). Use gentle circular motions, working from the center outwards, for 30 seconds to 2 minutes to thoroughly dissolve impurities. Add a little warm water to emulsify. The oil will turn milky. Continue massaging for a few seconds, then rinse thoroughly with warm water.

  2. Use a cleanser suited to your skin type : choose a cleanser suited to your skin's needs. Moisten your face with lukewarm water, then apply a small amount of gel, foam, cream, or cleansing milk suited to your skin type. Massage your face (avoiding the immediate eye area if the product is not suitable for use there) using gentle circular movements for about 30 seconds. Pay particular attention to the T-zone, the sides of the nose and the chin, where pores are more prone to clogging. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, then pat your face dry with a clean towel, without rubbing.

  3. Use a sponge or brush : for deep cleansing, you can gently exfoliate once a week to remove dead skin cells using a Konjac sponge or cleansing brush.

  4. Apply a toner (optional): if desired, applying a gentle toner can help restore skin balance and prepare the skin for subsequent skincare products. For sensitive skin, it is best to choose an alcohol-free formula.

  5. Moisturise the skin : after double cleansing, it is important to moisturise the skin with a cream or serum suited to the needs of its hydrolipidic film.

This routine is particularly recommended in the evening, but can also be done in the morning. If you feel that your skin becomes sensitive after double cleansing twice a day, opt for a lighter skincare routine in the morning.

By following these tips, you can enjoy fresh, clean, and radiant skin every day. Feel free to adapt your routine to the specific needs of your skin and consult a professional if you have any particular concerns.

Precautions

While the double cleansing routine has many benefits, it is best not to overdo it so as not to weaken the skin. Avoid harsh products (highly foaming sulfate-based gels, frequent exfoliants, micellar waters that are not rinsed off) that remove too much oil from the surface of the face and can cause dryness, irritation, and discomfort, especially on dry or sensitive skin. Do not double cleanse every day if your skin feels tight, red, or stings.

Expert advice

Double cleansing is not mandatory in the morning and evening. We recommend doing it in the evening, as nighttime is when the skin regenerates. A lighter cleansing routine is possible in the morning.

Why double cleanse your face?

The importance of double cleansing stems from the fact that at the end of the day, there are two types of impurities on your skin: "oily" impurities (pollution, makeup, sebum) and "watery" impurities (dust, sweat). As they cannot be removed in the same way, double cleansing is necessary to rid the skin of impurities.

When should you double cleanse your face?

Double cleansing is recommended before bedtime to remove impurities that have accumulated on the surface of the face throughout the day. However, this step can also be performed in the morning. During the night, the skin produces sebum, perspires, and actively renews itself, causing dead cells to detach.
