tanning is a defensive reaction of the skin when exposed to ultraviolet rays. In response to UV rays, the body stimulates the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of the skin, hair, and eyes. It is this increased production of melanin that gradually darkens the skin and gives it a more tanned appearance.
This pigmentation helps absorb some UV rays, but it does not provide sufficient protection on its own. Sun exposure also causes oxidative stress, which weakens skin cells and accelerates premature skin aging. A tan should therefore never be considered sufficient protection against the sun.
