Melanins are a family of molecules naturally present in humans and animals and responsible, depending on their type and concentration, for the colouring of the skin in humans, the feathers of birds and the fur of mammals, etc.

In the animal kingdom, this pigmentation plays a role in photoprotection, camouflage and thermoregulation. In humans, different types of melanin are used to define the colour of the eyes, hair and skin, and their main role is to protect against the sun's UV rays. In the body, melanin is naturally produced in melanocytes from tyrosine, and its synthesis is induced by exposure to the sun. It is eumelanin, a dark brown melanin, that is responsible for tanning. The individual proportions of eumelanin (brown) and pheomelanin (red) define the natural colour of our hair.
