Tingling, pins and needles, skin irritation… Your skin is showing signs of discomfort but you don't know how to recognise sensitive or allergic skin? In this article, discover the symptoms associated with sensitive skin. You'll also find natural solutions to soothe these reactions, as well as simple tips and recipes you can use every day to keep your skin soft, supple and comfortable.
Sensitive skin is skin that reacts frequently and excessively to different types of stimuli or aggression. This sensitivity can affect any area of the face or body, although it is generally limited to a few areas of the face. You may only have sensitive cheeks, for example.
Like dehydration, skin sensitivity is a tendency, i.e. a transient but recurring phenomenon (even cyclical in some people). Skin can therefore become more sensitive than usual from one day to the next, under the influence of various factors.
There are many causes of sensitive or reactive skin. It's important to learn about them so you can anticipate your skin's reaction and limit its impact.
Genetics: Sensitive skin linked to genetic factors often has a thinner and more fragile hydrolipidic barrier than conventional skin, making it more vulnerable to external aggression.
Climatic conditions: Wind, cold, dry air and UV rays in particular can upset the skin's hydrolipidic balance.
Air pollution: This can weaken our immune shield and alter the skin barrier. This encourages reactions.
Eating certain processed foods: These can encourage inflammation and make the skin more sensitive.
The use of cosmetic products: Cosmetics containing sensitising or irritating substances (such as perfumes, surfactants or certain preservatives) can weaken the skin barrier and make it reactive.
Hormonal variations: particularly during the menopause, the drop in oestrogen levels contributes to a fall in collagen production: thinner, less elastic skin is more easily sensitive to external aggressions and influences moisture levels.
The characteristics of sensitive skin
Sensitive or reactive skin can manifest itself in varying degrees of intensity and is characterised by sensations of discomfort and specific skin signs. The most common symptoms include regular feelings of tightness, heating, burning or tingling. It is also common to see diffuse redness on the most sensitive areas of the face, such as the cheeks and nose. In some cases, the skin can also become sensitive to touch, reacting even to a light touch.
Note: All skin types can become more or less sensitive, at any age. And it's not just dry skin that's affected. It's also possible to have oily, sensitive skin or combination sensitive skin.
Reactive, sensitive or allergic skin: what's the difference?
Allergic skin is intolerant to a given substance. Contact of the substance in question with the skin then creates an immune reaction (called an allergy) which generates a whole series of discomforts such as localised redness or swelling.
Irritated or sensitive skin: what's the difference?
Many women think they have hypersensitive skin. In reality, true skin sensitivity is rarer than you might think. In many cases, it's more a case of irritated skin. "Irritable skin" occurs when the skin has been in contact with a potentially irritating ingredient or product. In this case, the irritant substance has altered the skin barrier. This can lead to red patches on the face.

Avoid hot water Hot water can weaken the skin barrier and aggravate dryness and irritation. Use lukewarm water for cleansing.
Avoid highly scented products: Certain fragrances in cosmetic products can irritate sensitive or reactive skin. Fragrances often contain a large number of sensitising substances, allergens and large quantities of alcohol. All these compounds can cause reactions such as redness or itching. Choosing fragrance-free skin care products helps to minimise these risks.
Avoid aggressive exfoliants: If you feel the need to exfoliate your skin, avoid chemical peels or coarse-grained physical exfoliants, which can attack the skin and exacerbate irritation or inflammation. It is advisable to opt for gentle scrubs formulated for sensitive skin, or to use gentler enzymatic exfoliants.
Avoid mechanical sources of irritation: vigorous rubbing of the skin with a towel or flannel can irritate already sensitive skin. It's better to gently pat the skin dry instead. This avoids excessive friction, which could damage the skin barrier and cause redness.

If you have sensitive skin, it's best to carry out a sensitivity test before adding a new product to your routine to avoid any adverse reactions. Apply a small amount of the product to a small area of skin, usually on the inside of the wrist or behind the ear, and remain vigilant for 24 to 48 hours. If there is no reaction, the product can be used more extensively.
Avoid using too many different products and limit how often you use them. The balance of sensitive and reactive skin is very fragile. Once you've found your skin care routine, stick to it and avoid changing it. In winter, sensitive skin is more prone to dryness. Choose ultra-nourishing, hypoallergenic balms to replenish the skin's natural lipid film, a real barrier to external aggression.
How do you moisturise sensitive skin every day?
When it comes to moisturising, it's best to choose simple products with as many natural ingredients as possible. On our product sheets, we always tell you if our products are suitable for delicate skin. Remember to moisturise your skin morning and night: water and oil are essential for keeping skin comfortable.
Can sensitive skin change over time?
Yes, skin sensitivity can change over time as a result of various factors. For example, periods such as the menopause can exacerbate skin sensitivity due to a drop in oestrogen, resulting in a loss of moisture.
Is sensitive skin always dry?
No, sensitive skin can also be oily or combination. Skin sensitivity is linked to its responsiveness to stimuli. Oily skin can therefore also be red, tight or overheated.
