The tea tree owes its name to the navigator James Cook, who, upon arriving in Australia with his crew, had a refreshing tea made from its leaves. They also observed that the Indigenous people used these leaves to prepare poultices, which were applied to wounds to treat infections.
As early as 1922, long before the advent of synthetic antibiotics, chemist Arthur de Raman Penfold distilled Tea Tree leaves and confirmed the plant’s remarkable antiseptic and antibacterial properties. This discovery spread quickly, so much so that during World War II, the Australian government included a bottle of Tea Tree essential oil in every first aid kit for the army and the Australian navy.
Tea Tree is renowned for its broad-spectrum antibacterial, antiseptic, and antifungal properties. Extracted through steam distillation of the leaves, its hydrosol offers an excellent alternative to the essential oil, allowing you to experience the plant’s purifying benefits. Traditionally, it was used internally to combat parasites and treat gynaecological, respiratory, and digestive infections, while externally it was applied to disinfect minor wounds and injuries, soothe tooth inflammations, and address skin and nail conditions.
It also serves as an excellent toning and purifying ingredient for blemished skin, making it the perfect hydrosol for those who value the effectiveness of the essential oil but are sensitive to its strong scent.

You may be surprised by the smell of this new quality of tea tree hydolat, from France, grown and distilled in the Gard region by a couple of artisan distillers. In fact, its scent is milder than that of our usual tea tree hydrosol, with green, almost floral and fruity notes, and less of the powerful, slightly 'earthy' freshness of tea tree essential oil. If you don't like the smell of our usual tea tree hydrosol, we think this one might appeal to you!

For this Tea Tree hydrosol, we've selected a new, premium quality product of French origin! Developed in partnership with a young couple of producer-distillers from Gard, who are passionate about aromatic plants, this is an exceptional product with a delicate, aromatic scent that will surprise you.
Plant Tea Tree in the Gard!
The name Tea Tree is often associated with Australia, which is indeed the native home of this plant, known for producing an essential oil celebrated for its purifying properties.
So why not plant Tea Tree closer to home? That was the idea of a young couple of passionate producers and artisan distillers we collaborate with on various hydrosols. After extensive research into Tea Tree cultivation techniques, they boldly decided to try growing it on their own land. We were excited to join them on this adventure to bring you this remarkable hydrosol.
Once the seeds were ordered, they were nurtured in a nursery. The seeds took their time to sprout, but with lots of care, patience, water, and light, baby Tea Trees finally started to grow!
To maximise the learning from this experiment, three different plots were planted in the first year, each using different methods—on protective film, mulched, and in open soil. The growers observed differences in plant yield based on planting techniques, which will help them optimise the crop for future harvests.
With a hot, dry summer, the plants needed to be cared for daily from June to the end of August, requiring frequent weeding and, of course, watering, as Tea Tree naturally thrives near water.
As the Tea Trees grew, their scent became more intense yet floral: while retaining the characteristic aromatic notes of Tea Tree essential oil, it lacked the typical earthy undertones. Instead, it developed wonderfully pleasant, almost rosy floral notes!
The Tea Trees thrived, producing beautiful stems with numerous branches. Sensitive to cold and frost, they had to be harvested for distillation—a moment of bittersweet pride for the passionate growers who had lovingly tended to them for six months... But what a reward when the distillation room filled with the aromatic fragrance of Tea Tree!
This was a valuable experience, one that will surely be repeated as the cultivation and distillation processes continue to evolve.
A high-quality, artisanal extract
Rare and exclusive, this Tea Tree hydrosol is hand-distilled in the Gard region of France, using 1 kilogram of leaves and plant material to produce 1 litre of hydrosol.
This is known as a 1:1 extraction ratio, ensuring a richer aroma, better preservation, and most importantly, a high concentration of active molecules in the hydrosol, guaranteeing its exceptional quality. The hydrosol is then microfiltered to 0.2 microns, ensuring optimal purity and microbiological safety. We are proud to offer you a premium-quality hydrosol that is 100% pure and natural, free from preservatives, and both fresh and concentrated.
Perfect for creating your own homemade cosmetic products (such as toning and purifying lotions), you'll love its soft, green fragrance, which might appeal even to those who typically find the strong, earthy scent of Tea Tree overwhelming. A true favourite among the Aroma-Zone team!
Hydrosols are sensitive to pollution. As our Aroma-Zone hydrosols are fresh, pure products with no preservatives, we strongly recommend that you store them in the refrigerator and use them within 6 months of opening. When using them, make sure your hands are always clean and that you disinfect all utensils and bottles that come into contact with the hydrosols when preparing your homemade cosmetics. If you notice a change in appearance or smell, stop using the hydrosol.

Perfect for pimples or an irritated scalp. I prefer the hydrosol to the essential oil because the tea tree scent is less strong and I personally find it more effective.
