Moringa oleifera is a fast-growing tree found in tropical regions around the world. The Indian Ayurvedic tradition defines moringa as "Shigon," a miracle plant that can cure more than 300 diseases. Its recognised properties have led to its rapid adoption in many regions around the world. The ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians prized this "tree of life" for its protective, therapeutic, and nutritional properties.
Known as "nébédaye" in Senegal and "anambo" in Madagascar, moringa is used in cooking, herbal medicine, and cosmetics, and many parts of the plant are valued, including the leaves, which are eaten as a vegetable, and the seeds, which are used to produce an oil that is highly prized for skin and hair care.
Moringa leaf powder is renowned in herbal medicine for its neuroprotective, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, and immune-boosting effects.
Today, this powder is particularly prized as a "superfood" and used as a dietary supplement for its nutritional richness. Recent studies have shown that moringa is one of the most nutritious plants on Earth, making it an excellent ally in the fight against malnutrition. Its leaves contain, by weight, 7 times more vitamin C than oranges, 9 times more protein than yoghurt, 10 times more provitamin A than carrots, 15 times more potassium than bananas, 17 times more calcium than milk, and 25 times more iron than spinach. In addition, they contain 8 essential amino acids (isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine).
