Glycolic Acid Smoothing Facial Serum Recipe
Should the serum be applied before or after the cream?
The serum is a marvellous concentrate of active ingredients. It's so rich in benefits that it would be a real shame to use it incorrectly. But there's one mistake that many of us make with our skincare products: we put them on in the wrong order, and that can ruin everything. One of the questions you often ask is whether you should apply your serum before or after your cream. The answer is before, but you'll see that there are sometimes special cases where it's better to know about. Here's what you need to know to make the most of your serum every day.

Why apply a serum to your face?
A serum is like a superhero for our skin. Packed with active cosmetic ingredients, it has everything we need in the right place to support the other products in our skincare routine.
Unlike creams (whose essential role is to prevent dehydration), serums can be used toaddress very specific beauty concerns. For example, there are anti-ageing, anti-dark spot and anti-imperfection serums. Some formulas A closer look at hydration, firmness, elasticity, oxidative stress, radiance and so on. In short, there's something for everyone !
Serums are so popular because they are reputed to be more 'powerful' than the other products in our routine. They are supposed to be much more concentrated in active substances (hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, nicotinamide, collagen, etc.), as well as being more easily absorbed. They are therefore ideal for focusing your routine on a specific concern and supporting your skin's essential functions.
A quick reminder: creams and serums are complementary products. One does not replace the other!
When should I apply a serum to my face?
Should the serum be used before or after the moisturiser?
The rule is simple: you should apply your serum before your day cream and before your night cream.
In their most common definition, serums are low-molecular-weight aqueous solutions. They are designed to penetrate the upper layers of the epidermis very quickly, where they can distribute their active ingredients in the best possible place. So they need to have free rein to do their job properly. This is why they are applied to perfectly cleansed, bare skin. Their cosmetic effectiveness depends essentially on good penetration.
If you do the opposite and apply a cream (a mixture of water and fat) first, the fatty phase of the emulsion may prevent the serum from penetrating. As a result, a large part of the product (and the active ingredients) will remain trapped on the surface of your skin, where it will evaporate prematurely.
Can you mix serum and cream?
It's best to apply your serum first and then layer on your moisturiser. If you're in a hurry, you can still use our 'mix and apply' method.
This question of mixing cream + serum is no doubt linked to a certain amount of confusion following the appearance of ' boosters ' on the cosmetics market. Like serums, these are formulas with a high concentration of active ingredients. However, these boosters are not applied like traditional serums. They are developed specifically to be mixed with a cream to reinforce certain properties.
When in doubt, always refer to the instructions for use on your product.
Oil: before or after cream?
Sometimes, the base of a serum is not water, but oil. This type of serum is generally aimed at dry, mature skin, helping to strengthen the skin barrier. In this case (and only in this case!), it's best toapply your serum after your moisturiser. The oil will 'seal in' the humectant ingredients provided by the cream.
This is a tip that should be adopted by all skin types during the cold season. A small layer of oil on top of the cream is a bit like wearing a down jacket over a jumper! It forms a lipid barrier that insulates the skin more effectively from external winter aggressors, particularly the wind and cold.
Can the serum be used before make-up?
Yes, always! Skin care and make-up are two distinct phases of a skincare routine. We recommend that you always carry out your skincare routine before applying make-up. Follow the same order of application as above.
Your foundation will look much more even on well-moisturised skin. Simply wait a few minutes after the last step of your routine to start applying your make-up. Some day creams make excellent make-up bases.
In what order should I apply my facial care products?
Serum, before or after cream? The first thing to understand is that, even if you have excellent skincare products, applying them in the wrong order would be counterproductive. They all have a very specific role to play at a given moment in your routine. They have different functions, but also textures with varying degrees of coverage and concentrations of active ingredients. All these factors need to be taken into account to determine the right order in which to apply your skincare products.
Overall, a good skincare programme can be summed up in three stages.
Cleansing. This first stage includes make-up removers, cleansers, toning lotions and floral waters.
Moisturising. This essentially involves day cream or night cream, not forgetting eye cream. Serums and oils can also be included in this category.
Protection. Applying a sun cream completes your daily skincare routine.

Expert advice
Many serums come with dosing pipettes. Resist the temptation to press the pipette against your skin to release the product! It's true, it's quite satisfying to look at in the mirror, but it's not at all hygienic. The direct contact of the pipette with the skin on your face encourages the deposit of micro-organisms, which can then contaminate your product when you screw the pipette back onto the bottle. The right thing to do: pour the contents of the pipette over your hand, without touching the skin, then rub your palms together and apply to your face.

Should I apply a cream after a serum?
Yes, because these products don't have the same function. The serum is a helping hand that it would be a shame to do without, but the cream is still essential for maintaining your skin's barrier on a daily basis.

And the eye contour: before or after the face cream?
It all depends on the texture. According to the layering technique, you should apply the lightest textures first and finish with the fullest-coverage galenics. If you've opted for a very light gel or emulsion for your eye contour, apply your eye cream before your face cream. If your eye contour cream is richer and thicker (like a balm, for example) than your moisturiser, apply it last.
