What is acne?

Acne is a skin condition in which pimples, blackheads and cysts appear. It occurs mainly on the face, neck, back and chest. Acne is the result of inflammation of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands.

What are the causes?

Excessive sebum production: The sebaceous glands produce too much sebum, which can clog pores.

Accumulation of dead skin cells: Dead skin cells are not eliminated properly and mix with the sebum, blocking the hair follicles.

Bacterial proliferation: Propionibacterium acnes bacteria grow in clogged pores, causing inflammation.

Hormonal factors: Hormonal fluctuations, particularly during adolescence, menstruation, pregnancy or when taking contraceptives, can stimulate sebum production.

Genetic factors: Acne can be hereditary. If your parents have had acne, you are more likely to have it too.

Diet: Certain foods, particularly those with a high glycaemic index and dairy products, can aggravate acne in some people.

Stress: Stress can influence hormone levels and make acne worse.

Cosmetics: Using comedogenic products can clog pores and cause skin eruptions.

How do you recognise acne?

Acne manifests itself in different types of skin lesions. Here are the main symptoms:

  • Blackheads (open comedones) : Clogged open pores on the surface of the skin, filled with sebum and dead cells, dark in colour.

  • Whiteheads (closed comedones) : Clogged pores that are closed, appearing as small white bumps under the skin.

  • Papules: Small red, inflamed bumps, often sensitive to the touch.

  • Pustules: Red, pus-filled lesions with a red base and a white or yellow tip.

  • Nodules: Large, painful pimples, deep under the skin, hard to the touch.

  • Cysts: Deep, painful, pus-filled lesions that can lead to scarring.

Acne can also cause scarring, especially if the lesions are manipulated or broken. These can range from small marks to deeper, permanent scars.

Simple, effective tips to prevent and avoid the appearance of blackheads and spots in acne-prone skin

  1. Apply a sunscreen to your acne-prone skin to protect it from the sun. The sun's rays tend to dry out pimples initially and seem to improve the condition of the skin. But exposure to the sun then causes an overproduction of sebum, which can clog pores and encourage the appearance of pimples and blackheads. Opt for a sunscreen based on Natural Sunscreen for optimum protection.

  2. A poor lifestyle and dietary deficiencies can be responsible for an imbalance in the skin, stimulating the sebaceous glands and encouraging the appearance of pustules and blackheads. Sulphur is a very useful element in the fight against skin disorders. Consider MSM capsules, renowned for their sebum-regulating and purifying properties, ideal for improving the condition of blemish-prone and acne-prone skin.

  3. When it comes to make-up, take the right steps to avoid "cosmetic acne". Acne can simply be caused by inappropriate use of make-up, which leads to clogged pores and the appearance of pimples and imperfections. Opt for a light, mattifying, low-coverage, non-comedogenic make-up to let the skin breathe and camouflage blackheads. Choose an anti-blemish concealer that suits all skin types and apply it under a light powder foundation.

  4. Wash your hands before and after each make-up session. Apply your foundation with a brush rather than your fingers. It's best to reserve powder application for the T-zone, which is more prone to imperfections. Remember to clean your brushes and sponges at least once a week to prevent bacteria from developing. Impurities can also clog pores and lead to the appearance of pimples and blackheads.

Do not pierce a red pimple, as this will inevitably leave marks on your face. A white pimple can be pierced as long as you disinfect it to prevent it becoming infected. To do this, apply a drop of Tea Tree essential oil topically.
