Hair mask for curly hair: our natural recipes

Curly hair requires more maintenance than straight hair. In fact, its spiral structure and the production of sebum, which is produced by the scalp but does not filter down to the mid-lengths, make it more brittle and dry. That's why it's important to apply a hair mask at least once a week, to moisturise and repair your hair. Let's explore the natural recipes you can make at home to create your own mask for curly hair.

How do I know if I have curly hair?

A hairdresser will be able to advise you on the nature of your hair. To give you an idea, curly hair has a naturally drier and rougher hair fibre than dry hair. It is more porous and fragile, so it breaks more easily. Curl Pattern identifies different classifications of curly hair:

  • Type 2, wavy hair: including light, rather fine and loose waves (2A); more defined waves, resembling more pronounced S shapes (2B) and tighter waves, tending towards curls (2C).

  • Type 3, curly hair: large, well-defined ring-like curls (3A); tighter, more defined curls, often spring-like (3B) and very tight, spiral-like curls (3C).

  • Type 4, split/curly hair: tight curls with a defined "S" pattern (4A); zigzags or very tight curls with less "S" definition (4B) and frizzy texture, with little or no visible "S" pattern (4C).

Why does curly hair need a mask?

Because of its dry nature, curly hair needs looking after on a daily basis. Because of the curve of the curls, it is difficult for the sebum produced by the scalp to reach the mid-lengths. As a result, frizz develops, while the ends dry out and form split ends. Thanks to the natural ingredients in these masks and their properties, you can deeply moisturise curly hair, repairing it and helping it to look good.

What natural mask should I use for curly hair?

Natural ingredients, especially those you can find at home, are ideal for keeping curls healthy. Rich in moisturising or nourishing active ingredients, they will strengthen the hair fibre, making curls lighter and softer. What's more, their effects will prevent your hair splitting into forks and stop the ends from getting so brittle. Last but not least, some masks for curly hair can also help with styling by acting as a detangler.

To choose the right mask for your curly hair, first ask yourself what your needs are. Is your hair dehydrated or lacking in nutrition? Dehydrated hair lacks moisture, gets frizzy and fluffs up when there's humidity. It can also tangle more easily, forming knots. In this case, opt for water-rich ingredients like aloe vera. If your hair lacks nutrition, the mid-lengths will be split, brittle and dull. Opt for carrier oils or natural butter to strengthen the fibre.

What ingredients do I need to look after my curly hair?

  • Carrier oils: rich in essential fatty acids, they will moisturise curly hair, reduce frizz and nourish and cleanse the scalp. Choose 'first cold-pressed virgin' oils for optimum quality.

  • Coconut oil or cream: coconut helps moisturise curly hair from the inside out, reducing frizz and the risk of breakage or split ends.

  • Avocado: deeply nourishes damaged hair.

  • Dairy products (yoghurt, crème fraiche, milk): soothe irritated scalps and make it easy to get soft hair.

  • Honey: attracts water molecules to the hair fibre, keeping it hydrated.

  • Egg: cleanses the scalp, improves the elasticity of curly hair and controls excess sebum.

How do I make a homemade mask for curly hair?

Coconut milk mask

Coconut milk, made up of fatty acids, deeply moisturises and nourishes the hair, making it stronger and more resistant to breakage. It also improves elasticity. Combined with castor oil, hair will be fortified, repaired and will look much better.

  1. In a bowl, mix three tablespoons of coconut milk and one tablespoon of castor oil.

  2. Add a beaten egg yolk.

  3. Apply to hair, strand by strand, and leave on for at least an hour, before rinsing and cleansing with a mild shampoo.

Honey mask to nourish ends and prevent dry hair

Honey will naturally moisturise, restore shine, nourish the ends and restore curly hair's general vitality.

  1. In a bowl, mix two tablespoons of olive oil and a teaspoon of honey. Add the juice of half a lemon and stir.

  2. Apply to your hair, massaging the mixture into it.

  3. Leave for at least an hour, then rinse and shampoo as usual.

Shea butter mask to nourish curly hair

Rich in fatty acids and vitamins A and E, shea butter nourishes hair, reinforces elasticity and protects against environmental damage.

  1. Melt two tablespoons of shea butter and one tablespoon of cocoa butter in a bain-marie.

  2. Remove from the heat and add a drop of ylang-ylang essential oil.

  3. Apply the creamy texture to damp hair, concentrating on the hair itself and roots.

  4. Leave in for a few minutes before rinsing with warm water.

Yoghurt mask to moisturise hair

Yoghurt softens and moisturises the hair. It's ideal for frizzy or curly hair as it reduces frizz.

  1. In a bowl, mix one yoghurt with one tablespoon of jojoba oil.

  2. Apply this mixture all over the hair and scalp.

  3. Leave for 20 minutes, rinse and shampoo as usual.

Nourishing mask with argan oil

Argan oil, with its essential fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants, deeply nourishes the hair, strengthening its structure and promoting healthier hair. It also repairs split ends and redefines curls.

  1. Pour three tablespoons of argan oil into a bowl.

  2. Apply to the whole of the hair, avoiding the roots.

  3. Wrap your head in a warm towel and leave overnight.

Moisturising mask with aloe vera

Made up of 98% water, aloe vera is the perfect moisturiser for curly hair. It retains water at the heart of the hair fibre.

  1. In a bowl, mix two tablespoons of aloe vera gel, two tablespoons of coconut oil and one tablespoon of shea butter.

  2. Apply the texture to damp hair, concentrating on the mid-lengths and ends.

  3. Leave in and rinse.

Frizzy hair can use this mask as a leave-in treatment, as it will redefine curls.

Nourishing avocado mask

Rich in essential acids, avocado regenerates and strengthens the hair fibre, while improving the appearance of curls. In a bowl, mix half a ripe avocado with two tablespoons of jojoba oil.

  1. Apply to hair and leave on for at least an hour or overnight in a warm towel.

  2. Rinse with warm water.

How do I apply a mask to curly hair?

Hair masks for curly hair are used on all of the hair before shampooing, when hair is fine, or after if it is curly and damaged. Leave in for at least 30 minutes to reap the full benefits, or overnight whenever possible. To deeply moisturise curly hair and prevent split ends and dullness, apply a mask at least once a week.
