The Prickly Pear is a cactus native to Mexico, known as nopal (it even features on the emblem of the Mexican flag). It also grows abundantly around the Mediterranean basin, where it was brought back on Christopher Columbus’s voyages. Its thick paddle-shaped stems are adorned in spring with beautiful bright yellow flowers, which are followed by fruits or fleshy berries of a yellowish-green colour, sometimes tinged with red: Prickly Pears.
These prickly pears are very rich in nutrients and are widely used in the food industry as a source of vitamin C and natural food colourings. The seeds, present in large quantities in these fruits (about 300 seeds per 160 g fruit), can be pressed to obtain Prickly Pear oil, which is very expensive and highly valued. The macerated oil we obtain from these fruits is a much more affordable alternative to virgin Prickly Pear oil. By macerating Prickly Pears in sunflower oil, we extract the liposoluble active compounds contained in the fruit and seeds.
This macerate can be used in your cosmetic formulations as it has excellent effects against the signs of aging.

EO = Essential Oil
VO = Carrier Oil or Macerated Oil
22 ml of Prickly Pear macerated oil
13 ml of Rose hydrosol
1.5 g of Stearic Acid
1.5 g of organic Shea Butter
A dash of Aosaïne
A dash of Hyaluronic Acid
15 drops of Ho Wood essential oil
5 drops of Rockrose essential oil
2 drops of Vitamin E
5 drops of grapefruit Seed Extract
Instructions: melt the stearic acid and shea butter with the oil in a bain-marie and set aside the floral water mixed with the aosaïne and hyaluronic acid powders. Once the wax is melted, remove from the bain-marie, let cool for a few moments, and gradually add the hydrosol while stirring constantly (in a figure-of-eight motion with the pestle, drawing an 8 at the bottom of the mortar). As the mixture solidifies at the edges, gradually fold it back into the centre. Add the 2 essential oils, vitamin E, and grapefruit seed extract, and mix together thoroughly. Pour the mixture into a 30 ml jar and store in a cool place.
Important note from Aroma-Zone: it is not easy to create a stable emulsion (lotion) using only wax. Since waxes are weak emulsifiers, we recommend adding an emulsifier. You can find all Aroma-Zone emulsifiers here.
