What is shingles?

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is an infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus in adulthood. After contracting chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the nerve ganglia. Years later, it can reactivate when the immune system is weakened due to an illnessfatigue, or stress. Sun exposure or an unbalanced diet can also be triggers for this viral reactivation.

It then causes painful skin rashes on a specific part of the body. Shingles typically manifests as red patches, fluid-filled blisters, and intense pain in the affected area.

Symptoms

Reactivation of the virus allows it to multiply along the nerves, initially causing a burning sensation in the affected area. This area is usually well-defined. The skin then takes on a bright pink color, and blisters containing a small amount of clear fluid appear. These blisters often cluster together and remain confined to the area of altered sensitivity. They resemble those seen in children with chickenpox. Within a week, these blisters dry out and form scabs that fall off after about ten days. In some cases, a mild fever is also observed.

But what is most striking in cases of shingles is the pain felt by most patients in the infected area. This pain, which feels like burning, stinging from nettles, or even electric shocks, is caused by nerve damage (neuralgia) and is exacerbated by friction, heat, wind, etc.

Is this condition serious? Can it be contagious?

Although shingles can be very painful, it is generally harmless, with some exceptions (ophthalmic shingles, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals).

Note that shingles is a contagious disease, transmitted through skin-to-skin contact with the lesions; it can cause chickenpox in individuals who have never contracted the varicella-zoster virus.

How can you soothe shingles naturally?

Soothing Shingles and Boosting Your Immune System

Certain antiviral essential oils are particularly suited to this type of virus and can soothe sharp pains. In addition to local treatment, it’s beneficial to use an aromatic blend to strengthen your weakened immune system.

How can you speed up the healing process for shingles?

Speeding up the healing of shingles requires specific treatments, such as:

  • Antiviral medications can reduce the duration and severity of symptoms.

  • Pain relief : Pain relievers may be recommended to alleviate pain.

  • Rest and hydration: Rest and adequate hydration promote recovery.

  • Boosting the immune system with essential oils such as Tea Tree and Niaouli, which have powerful antiviral and antifungal properties to combat shingles. They help reduce the risk of secondary infection.

How can you relieve the burning sensation of shingles?

To relieve the burning sensation, applying cold compresses can be beneficial. Soothing creams or oils made with chamomile or calendula, as well as anti-inflammatory essential oils, can also help alleviate discomfort.

What are the possible complications of shingles?

Although most cases of shingles heal without serious complications, complications can arise, particularly if pain persists after the shingles have healed or if the lesions become infected, requiring medical attention.

Home remedies to relieve shingles

Certain home remedies can complement medical treatment, such as:

  • Honey Compress: Honey has antiviral and soothing properties.

  • Aloe Vera: Applied topically, aloe vera can help soothe irritated skin.

  • Oatmeal Bath: A colloidal oatmeal bath can relieve itching and inflammation.

Also consider adjusting your diet. It is recommended to consume foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, lemons, kiwis, strawberries, blackcurrants, bell peppers, turnips, and vegetable juices with detoxifying properties.

Precautions and Contraindications

The use of essential oils can be beneficial, but certain precautions must be taken:

  • Consult a healthcare professional before using essential oils.

  • Be sure to properly dilute essential oils before application.

  • Perform a skin test by applying a drop to the inside of your elbow.

  • Avoid sensitive areas: Do not apply essential oils to sensitive or open areas.

  • Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women and people with hormone-dependent, cardiovascular, or liver conditions, or high blood pressure.

  • Use with caution on people with sensitive skin, as skin irritation may occur.

Note that aromatherapy can be a complementary treatment but does not replace conventional medical treatments. The onset of shingles requires a medical consultation for diagnosis and to ensure proper medical follow-up.
