Lemon Verbena, also known as Scented Verbena, is a plant belonging to the Verbenaceae family. Native to South America, it is now widely cultivated in temperate regions around the world. In ancient times, Verbena was revered for its many virtues and considered a magical plant. Druids were said to use it to enhance clairvoyance and aid in prophecy. Its Latin name, verbenaca, means “sacred branch” or “magic wand”.
Lemon Verbena essential oil, obtained by steam distillation, is one of the rarest and most expensive oils on the market (it takes around 7,000 kg of plant to make one litre of essential oil).
OurLemon Verbena hydrosol is therefore a good alternative for rediscovering its fresh fragrance and its thousand and one virtues in aqueous form.
Ethnic populations used it as a general tonic for the body, to balance the nervous system and to help the natural defences and digestive system function properly. Women also used it to relieve pre-menstrual pain.
As a cosmetic ingredient, it softens and refreshes the skin, while restoring tone and firmness.
In the kitchen, its fresh, delicate flavour can be used to flavour drinks and desserts, and to add a surprising aroma to sauces.
