Oats (Avena Sativa L.), a member of the Poaceae (Grasses) family, are a cereal grown mainly for their seeds. It is a grass (a plant with small flowers grouped in spikes) that can grow up to 1.5 metres tall. There are different varieties of oat, such as wild oats, large naked oats, small naked oats and red oats, but the most widely eaten is the common oat (A. Sativa).
Originally from the northern half of Europe (England, Germany, Sweden, etc.), and although this remains its preferred region, oats have also spread to North America and are even grown in certain regions with a more Mediterranean climate. As a result, oats are now one of the most widely grown and consumed cereals in the world. This is partly due to its interesting nutritional composition, oats being a good source of fibre, protein, unsaturated fatty acids and minerals, among other things. But it's also due to its relatively easy growing conditions. Oats grow well in temperate climates, as they don't require particularly high temperatures in summer, and are fairly resistant to wet weather.
To eat them, you need to remove the hull from around the oat seed: this is how you get oatmeal. The British regularly eat oatmeal for breakfast, boiled with water or lotion: this is known as porridge.
Oats are also eaten in the form of flakes: these are groats that have been steamed and then crushed with a roller. They can then be eaten as granola, or in culinary preparations (cookies, for example).
Finally, oats can also be eaten in the form of flour, bran or whole grains.
